Brooke didn’t pull away, but she didn’t look at him either as they settled. He kept his arms around her, stroking her back. Hopefully, it’d ease any tension or awkwardness she might be feeling. She had to know he wasn’t about to make professions of love or ask for a relationship, but he didn’t want to be the asshole who hopped up and left the second his balls were empty.

At the very least, she deserved him sticking around for a half hour or so. Maybe until she fell asleep.

With a soft sigh, Brooke shifted. One of her legs lay across his thighs, and her head was cradled in the space between his arm and his chest while her palm rested over his heart. “It’s pounding,” she whispered.

With a chuckle, he stroked back the hair that had stuck to her cheek. “You gave this old guy a workout. Hope you’re not expecting a repeat anytime soon because I’m forty-six, babe. Gonna need more than a few minutes or maybe some jumper cables to get some life back in him,” he said, pointing to his spent cock.

Brooke laughed as she propped her chin on his chest. The joke had done precisely what he’d hoped and helped skip past the post-orgasm tension. “Don’t worry, old man. I’m only a few years behind you, and I definitely need a nap after that. Could stand a shower, too.”

Oh man, that sounded good. Warm water, soap, a slippery Brooke. A shower sounded perfect. But way too intimate. But it was the perfect segue into him leaving. “Gotta take care of that,” he said, pointing toward the condom.

“Oh, right.” Brooke sat up, and as she did, the sheet slipped down. She folded her arms over her chest, and her face turned red as a cherry.

With a sigh, he reached for her crossed arms. “No point in it now, babe. I’ve seen, touched, and tasted it, and I gotta tell ya, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen better.”

A bark of laughter left her. “That’s some smooth-talking bullshit right there.”

With a grunt, he stood, then pulled off the condom as he walked toward the bathroom. “I’m not one to give out unwarranted compliments. If I tell you your tits are perfect, they’re fucking perfect.” He tied off the condom and tossed it in her trash can before washing his hands. When he emerged from the bathroom, she was wearing an oversized T-shirt and a smile.

“Thank you,” she said, and he had a feeling it was for more than the words.

Still naked, he snagged her wrist and pulled her against him. “I’m pretty sure I should be thanking you. You blew my fucking top off.”

Her shy smile got him every time. How she could be so ballsy in life and timid in an intimate setting was a testament to her ex’s shitty job as a husband. But he’d get her there…

Well, some man would.

He kissed her then hunted down his clothing. Brooke sat on the edge of her bed and made no attempt to hide how she watched every move he made. Something about her gaze on him filled him with warmth. Been a long time since he’d spent time with a woman in this way. Hell, before the arrest, he and his ol’ lady didn’t exactly have the type of relationship where they enjoyed quiet peace with each other. He’d been an MC president, and she wanted to be the queen. She’d been a hot, good fuck, understood the life, and promised loyalty. She’d been just what a hot-headed outlaw president wanted. Every man in the club envied him.

Too bad she’d been a lying, cheating bitch who’d betrayed him in the worst way, setting off a chain of events that permanently altered his life.

Now, with more than thirteen years of hindsight, he understood the relationship had been a train wreck waiting to happen. A hard lesson he’d never need to relearn.

Once fully dressed, he pulled her up to stand with him. “Gotta grab Harley before I take off.”

For a split second, Brooke stiffened against him then seemed to shake it off.

Had she thought he’d stay? Did she want him to stay?

She nodded. “I’m sure Harley is snuggled up with her boyfriend.”

Grinning, he pressed a final kiss to her lips to keep himself from saying something stupid, like how incredible he found her or asking when they could do this again. But when he pulled back, he said something even more foolish. “I’m getting all the guys together Sunday night to work on our plans for the dog fight. You wanna be there?”

Her eyes lit. “You’d want me to come?”

Oh, that was a dangerous question. He was finding he wanted her around a lot of the time when he shouldn’t. “You deserve to be there.”

Some of the light dimmed. “Well, then, yes, thanks. I’ll be there.”
