“What for?” Penny asked.

“Well, Ted told me that he is taking me somewhere nice and to dress appropriate. He told me it was going to be a very special evening.”

“Hmmm…. Well, I’m intrigued. Now, special evening…what do you think that means?”

I checked a few strands of hair that were standing crazy and sighed. “I’m not sure. We haven’t been together that long, so there are no anniversaries or anything that I’m aware of.”

Penny sat down on the edge of my bed excitedly. “Ooh! What if he is one of those guys that over celebrates every little milestone in a relationship. You know, like first kiss, first hand holding, three-month anniversary—that sort of thing.”

“I don’t think he is and that would be very annoying,” I said.

Penny shook her head and clicked her lips. “You have no soul. There is an abundant lack of romance in your life, my dear.”

“Wow, now you are being overdramatic. I have romance. I’m full of romance, but I’m not weird about it.”

“There is nothing weird about romance. I think everything should be celebrated.”

“You have so many issues,” I said. “But I love you anyway”

“What are Chastity and Angel doing tonight?” Penny asked. “If this is such an important thing, I figured they’d be here flocking around you.”

“They don’t flock…do they?”

“They totally flock. I love them dearly, but they both need to get lives in the most serious way.”

“I agree,” I said. “I’m not sure what they are up to, but I didn’t tell them much about tonight.”

“Why not?”

“Because they don’t have lives and you know how they get. They would have me so nervous by the time I left here that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I’d be a total wreck. So I called you for guidance and advice. You are my calm friend.”

“It’s very sad that you consider me your calm friend, but I’m glad to be here. And yes, you look stunning.”

I glanced back at myself in the mirror. I was wearing one of my best looking dresses that was very expensive, but I hardly ever wore it. It was tailor made and it just accentuated every single one of my curves and my bust so beautifully. Whenever I found myself not feeling sexy, I would put this dress on and it would instantly do the trick. It was an ultimate-power dress. This dress should have been a registered weapon. It was that hot.

“So, he is taking you to a nice restaurant?” Penny asked. “Isn’t he kind of poor? I mean, he hasn’t done any racing in a while and you said his car and apartment aren’t that great.”

“They are fine, but I don’t think he has a lot of money coming in, if any at all right now. He is just trying to get on his feet. That’s a big blow to take. He had worked his whole life for this and now when he is just about to achieve it, the whole thing blows up in his face. I know he is hurting, but he is trying so hard to be strong.”

“I get that,” Penny said. “That’s cool. I just wonder what he means by ‘nice’ and how he is paying for it.”

Looking at her I had to wonder. She did have a good question, but I promised myself that I wasn’t going to ask too much about it. I could have even offered to pay but Ted was too stuck in his ways to ever accept my charity; I knew that. In fact, I kind of loved that about him. He was a salt of the earth type of guy. And from what I could tell he had a heart of gold.

I found out soon what Ted meant by ‘nice’. I was blown away.

When Ted pulled up in front of my house he was riding in a big stretch limousine. And it was certainly not one of mine, nor my driver.

“Honey, I know this had to cost a lot of money. How did you pull this off?” I asked Ted when he bounded up the steps to my door.

Ted smiled. “I have my sources,” he replied. (I later learned that his friend Bruce’s uncle owned a small limousine company and let him borrow the limo free of charge, and Ted borrowed five hundred dollars from his friend Bennie, promising to pay him back with interest…eventually). Yep, Ted’s charm was endless and effortless.

“So, what all do you have planned for this evening?” I asked when we were in the limo.

Ted smiled and put his arm around me. “Oh, there will be a few surprises. I just hope you are ready for them.”

I smiled and laid my head on his shoulder. I was very excited to see what surprises were ahead.

The limo dropped us off at Island Prime. It was actually one of my favorite dinner spots. The food and the service were exquisite and the view was perfect with a large view of the San Diego skyline. It was picturesque.
