“Yes. We didn’t have a name. Only yours.” It seemed like a lifetime ago when Dr. Mors coached me on how to interact with my volunteers. I was certain the old man would not approve of how I had spent my time with Captain Jackson.
He chuckled. “It had to be the nosey lady at the register. She kept asking questions. Wanted to know where I was staying. If I was alone.” He pulled two bottles of beer from the fridge. “I guess I can’t be angry with her.”
I reached for the beer he handed me. “You’re not? You wouldn’t consider that an invasion of privacy? Or an invasion of something?”
He grinned. “Hell no. I wouldn’t have met you.”
I forgot I was supposed to drink the beer. In that moment, all I could do was look in his eyes. It didn’t make sense. My heart stirred. My pulse quickened. I was completely falling for him. Or I already had.

I couldn’t get over how beautiful she was. I promised her lunch, but I took the beer from her hand. My palms slid to her face as I brushed my lips over hers. I inhaled all of her when my mouth crushed into hers.
The need for her was uncontrollable. Something had happened to me last night. I hungered for her more than ever.
She moaned and her lips parted for me. I loved how she tasted. My arms roamed over her body, gripping her ass. God, she had a perfect round ass.
My eyes darted to hers and I could read everything she was thinking. I picked her up and sat her on the table. She bit at my lips, sucking and pulling me toward her. I felt the fire in my chest when I thought about stripping her down on my kitchen table.
Her hands tugged on my T-shirt, her eyes playful. “I like this kind of lunch.” She giggled.
“I’m about to have dessert.” I waggled my eyebrows.
“God, yes,” she moaned.
I kissed her neck and throat, letting her lean back into my hands. I was going to feast on her gorgeous body.
I was about to toss the shirt on the floor when I heard wheels crunching over the gravel driveway. I paused, shifting my ears toward the door. Why was someone here?
“What is it?” she asked. Her eyes met mine.
“I think we have company.” Shit. I left her sitting on the table and walked to the living room window. “Damn it. It’s my cousin. Wait here.”
I closed the door behind me and greeted Cane on the porch.
“Don’t you ever call?” I grunted.
“Do you ever turn your phone on?” Cane retorted.
I pulled my cell from my back pocket. The screen was black. I had forgotten to charge the battery overnight. I was preoccupied with something much more worthy of my time.
“Right. What’s up?” I wanted to get Cane off my porch so I could get back to Gretchen.
“We have a problem. I must have called you 100 times”
“I was busy last night.”
Cane’s eyebrows arched. “Busy? Does that mean you were with the hot little doctor?”
My eyes flared. “Watch it,” I snapped. “Don’t talk about her like that.”
“Sorry. Just asking. She’s sort of a part of this.”
I stood down. I didn’t want Gretchen to hear our conversation. I tried to keep my voice low. Until I could tell her everything, I didn’t want her to know what my family was battling.
“Anyway, what happened?”
