Matt didn’t. “Let’s all calm down. We only want to make sure Kimmie is okay. You can understand that, can’t you?” He’s stalling. Sean must be moving quietly to get Carl.
“I understand more than you know. This cunt ruined my life—she and her goddamn family. Put down your gun now or I’ll blow her brains out. You’d like to join your daddy, wouldn’t you, Jena?”
Fuming, she lifted her leg and slammed her heel into his toes and shoved her elbow into his stomach.
Carl’s grip loosened.
A gun fired from their left.
She turned around and saw the fucker fall to the sidewalk, blood pouring out of his head.
She bolted to room seven. “Kimmie?”
“Mommy?”
She lifted her little girl into her arms, kissing her face through tears of relief. “I’m here, baby. Mommy is here.”
Chapter Sixteen
Jena held her mother’s fingers. It was so hard to see her in a hospital bed with an IV and an oxygen tube in her nose. Sean was in the recliner with a sleeping Kimmie in his arms. Matt had gone to get coffee.
Her two guys had won her daughter over quickly, reminding her about her birthday. Jena knew it had only been a way to distract her from what had been going on outside the motel room, but it had worked to put a smile on Kimmie’s face. Being five years old had some advantages.
God, she loved Matt and Sean. They’d made sure that Kimmie didn’t come out of the motel room until Carl’s body was removed.
What a night. Carl was no longer a threat to her and Kimmie. He was dead. Her mother’s condition was stable. It was clear to everyone on the scene that her mom had put up quite the fight. The fucker had broken her mother’s nose and both her wrists, but the worst of the lot was the knife wound in her stomach. She’d been rushed into surgery to repair the damage. The procedure was a success.
The surgeon entered the room, which pleased Jena. It was late, but the doctor wasn’t rushing. He had her mom’s chart in his hand. He looked at the monitor and took a couple of notes.
“How’s she doing?” she asked.
“I wish all my patients were as tough as Janet Taylor.” The surgeon turned to her. “I was a big fan of your dad.”
“Me, too. I sure miss him.” She glanced over at Kimmie in Sean’s arms, reminding her how wonderful it had been when her own dad was still alive.
“I’m going to keep your mom sedated for the night just so she can rest. Tomorrow morning we will get her up on her feet and walking the halls.”
“I don’t think that is going to be a problem for Mom.”
The doctor chuckled. “I’m sure it won’t be. If you have any issues, get the nurse to page me. I’m pretty sure tonight will be nice and quiet for your mom.”
“Thank you, Doctor.”
The surgeon left.
“Honey, you want to take this chair and get some sleep?” Sean asked quietly.
“No. I couldn’t sleep. Not now.” She had a lot to think about. How am I going to tell Mom about Matt and Sean? She wasn’t sure how her mom would take the news that she was in love with two men and they were in love with her. Her mother was more than just a parent to her. She was her friend. This news might shock her mom, but she deserved to know how happy Matt and Sean had made her daughter.
Matt returned with the coffee, quietly shutting the door. “Here you go, baby.”
She took the cup. “Thanks, honey.”
He kissed her and then walked over to Kimmie and Sean. “How’s our little trooper?”
“She’s amazing and sound asleep,” Sean told him.
Her heart was theirs. Somehow, she would find just the right words to tell her mother everything. She prayed her mom would understand.
