“Is it okay, Mommy?”
Jena nodded, keeping her hand in her purse and her stare at the door Mitrofanov had left through.
Alice led Kimmie to the counter. Matt watched as his daughter climbed up on the barstool and dug into her ice cream.
“Who the hell does that son of a bitch think he is coming into my town and threatening people?” Jason said. “Black told Dylan that he will be here with the laptop in a few hours.”
“We need that evidence now,” Nicole said.
“You’re right about that,” Jason agreed. “Once we have it in our possession, we’ll see what Mitrofanov thinks about that. Even his high-dollar mafia attorney won’t be able to help him.”
Matt felt his cell vibrate. He pulled it out and read the text. “Dylan wants us all back at your office, Jason. Mr. Black is with him now.”
“He came early,” Nicole said.
“Mom,” Jena said. “Do you mind staying here with Kimmie?”
“Not at all, honey.”
Gary nodded, looking directly at him and Sean. “I’ll stay with Janet and Kimmie, too.”
He liked the guy more and more. “Thanks.”

Sean walked to the building that housed the jail and sheriff’s office. Jena was between him and Matt. Jason and Nicole led the way in.
“They’re already in your office, Sheriff,” Shannon, Jason’s admin, stated flatly.
They all walked past her, entering the room.
Facing each other, Dylan and Black sat in chairs. On the table between them was what he hoped would send Niklaus to prison. A laptop.
“We have all the goods on this we need,” Dylan said. “Including things about your ex-boyfriend, Jena. We can get the money that vanished after your dad died back for you.”
“How?”
“It’s in the Caymans. All of it. Black says we can have it back in your mom’s accounts in under three months. The Knights’ money is there, too.”
“Not all of it,” Black told them. “Five million is still missing.”
“I don’t understand.” Jena shook her head. “Mitrofanov had nothing to do with Carl.”
“That’s true, but Kip Lunceford did,” Black told them. “Lunceford recruited you to bring down TBK. He also met with Mitrofanov.”
“Lunceford is the common denominator in all this mess.” Sean squeezed Jena’s hand.
“Yes, he is,” Black said. “With the lines of code you sent back to the Agency, we were able to decipher a ton of terrorist plots Lunceford is behind.”
“It was Jena’s code, boss,” Matt said. “She’s the one who figured out most of the algorithms that Kip had embedded into TBK.”
“Perhaps I should recruit Jena,” Black said, his tone more serious than Sean would like.
“Boss?” Jason’s eyebrows shot up.
Jena turned to him and Matt. “Are you two still on the CIA’s payroll?”
Sean looked at Black. The man nodded, giving him the green light to break his cover. “Yes, we are, honey.”
