Dr. Stud

“No strange odor at all,” Brock chimes in.
Spencer quirks an eyebrow at him.
“Well, I was kind of right there when it happened. That’s all,” he adds, “because I just made her come. Until she went into labor.”
He grins proudly, waiting for his congratulations.
“I am really not enjoying that, Brock! Ow! Ow! Ow!”
“Okay, I am going to get a private ambulance company over here. Should take six minutes, tops. I timed them. They’re on call.”
The three of them lead me through the lobby, fretting over every step that I take. I start doing some deep breathing, humming when the next contraction hits.
It’s a strange feeling, not exactly like a menstrual cramp, but not totally different either. Much more intense, that’s for sure.
When we get to the front door, Royce and Sully are there. Sully picks me up immediately, holding me as he stares through the front door waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
“I probably could’ve picked her up if she asked me to,” Brock pouts.
“Sure you could, little brother,” Sully answers. “I hear you’re the one who put her into labor, so you will always have that to look back on.”
“Seriously, I want people to stop talking about that.”
“Whatever you say, princess!”
The ambulance arrives, and it’s not a long ride to the hospital, but it still feels intense. While everything hurts, I also know it’s finally happening. I’m so excited, I want it to all happen at once so I can get to the end.
I just want to see my baby.
Our private birthing suite is extra large to accommodate all the daddies in the room. The doctors must have coached all the nurses, because no one even dares to raise an eyebrow at us. They all just spring into action, getting me in the bed, getting me some pain relief drugs, making sure that everybody has their instructions. All too soon, I am being told to push. The pain is unimaginable, yet I know there’s nothing to be done but live through it. Keep pushing until our child is with us, soldiering on.
My husbands hold my hands, and hold my knees back. They yell at me to push when the doctor says push, they wipe the sweat off my forehead when it gets too much. Sully feeds me ice chips from his fingertips. Royce keeps my hair out of my eyes. Trey puts little socks on my feet to keep them from getting too cold in the stirrups.
Finally, when I think I simply can’t do any more, they say they’ve got her shoulder. She’s almost here. Just a little bit further.
When I hear that cry, I can’t believe it. It feels like a dream. That’s my baby. That’s our baby. Me and my husbands.
“It’s a girl,” says the nurse after she’s wiped her down and wrapped her in a towel.
She lays this tiny, trembling bundle against my chest and smiles at me.
“Absolutely perfect, well done.”
My husbands crowd around me, alternating between kissing me and kissing the beautiful little life we made together. Sully is crying happy tears, while Trey and Brock bawl like children. It’s a beautiful moment, one that I never could have imagined could be real. And yet here we are, coming to the end of our fairy tale.
“Welcome to the world, little Lindsay,” I whisper to her. “You’re named after your grandma. The most beautiful woman who ever lived. And you are loved more than you’ll ever know.”
It’s the most beautiful moment I’ve ever experienced. It’s just like a fairy tale.
