Saving Savannah

I tried not to panic while waiting for my air to return. When it finally did, I spent my first word wisely:
“GODDAMMIT.”
It wasn’t the first time I’d had the dream, and it wouldn’t be the last. This time though, things had just gone so… far.
The song, for one. Either I’d forgotten it completely or I’d intentionally barred it from my mind. And yet here it was again, every haunting note. Floating unmistakably through my brain, as the events of that night unfolded again in stark, terrifying clarity.
At least it was Monday — the one day I’d promised myself I’d take off. Most of the shops on Essex were closed anyway. Or so I kept telling myself.
Still…
I could go in. I could at least do something. I was finally back on the proverbial horse, and it made no sense to slip back out of the saddle. If only—
BZZZZZT.
My phone buzzed, and I glanced down at it. The incoming text-message was short and sweet:
HUNK1: Breakfast?
All thoughts of work faded as my mouth stretched into a smile. I hammered out a quick answer:
Hell yeah. It’s like you read my mind.
I knew what was coming next before it even showed:
HUNK1: I thought you were the one
who reads people? Remember?
I leaned back against the bed, resting my head on the mattress. The bad parts of my dream already fading.
Yeah, well it’s my day off. And I want
some goddamn bacon.
HUNK3: Bacon we can do. Dress cute, we’ll
get you in 45. And we’re taking you
for a ride afterwards.
My heart began racing all over again. Possibly because I was suddenly talking with more than one of them. But more so from the double entendre of ‘taking me for a ride’.
I rose slowly, stretching, wondering what their comments meant. Indoor cute? Outdoor cute? And where in the world were we going?
There were so many questions that needed to be answered.
But not until after coffee.

“So Zane here said you gave him a really great palm reading.”
I glanced across the table, to where Zane was smiling like that cat that ate the canary. “A fantastic palm reading, actually,” he winked at me.
I smirked and rolled my eyes. There was no way he hadn’t told Erik everything, and I was fine with that. This was just a little version of a not-so-inside joke.
