“That guy stalks women. He’s hurt them in the past. Just because he got away with it doesn’t mean he isn’t dangerous.”
She glared up at him as she tried to free her hand. He held her tight.
“There’s all sorts of dangerous, Jack.”
Here we go again.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean? You’re always talking in riddles, woman. For once will you just say what you mean?”
She gave an irritated sigh.
“Fine, for those of us who are slow on the uptake. I’ll explain myself.”
She reached up, grabbed the back of his neck and pulled his mouth towards her. Jack had instant brain freeze. Davina’s kiss didn’t feel sexy and yielding, it felt angry. Fine. He could play this game too. He’d see her angry and raise her a furious.
He ran his fingers into the hair at the base of her neck and pulled her tight to him. His tongue plundered her mouth. He was certain that he’d never win a war of words with Davina, but this, this he excelled at. Davina pulled her hand free of his to wrap both arms around his neck.
He put a hand on either side of her waist and lifted her so that she could wrap her legs around him. She did as he’d intended and Jack felt like he’d won a small victory. He backed her through the doorway and into the hall. Her breath was fast against his mouth. Her kisses were desperate. She broke contact for a second.
“You’re not allowed in here until the inspection,” she said, but it lacked the ferocity of previous declarations.
“I’ll keep my eyes shut until Tuesday,” he told her before claiming her mouth all over again.
Davina kissed him deeply before backing off again.
“How do I know I can trust you?”
He looked her deep in the eyes for a moment. Man, she was beautiful.
“You can always trust me, Davy,” he said.
Davina seemed to be searching his face for some sort of answer. Her smile was slow, wide and heavy with intention. Whatever the answer had been, Jack was pretty sure it went in his favour. He backed her towards the stairs.
“Your eyes are open,” she teased.
“Trust me, you don’t want me to carry you up the stairs with them shut.”
Her eyes crinkled as a deep tinge spread through her cheeks.
“Why go upstairs?” she said.
Jack’s heart tried to make a break for it through his chest.
“Yeah,” he said. “Why, indeed.”
She wrapped her legs tighter around him, as Jack leaned forward to capture her mouth again. Hungry, hungry kisses. Man, but she tasted good. Cherries. Chocolate. Everything good. He stroked the small of her back. There were too many clothes. He pulled at the prim white blouse and felt a base satisfaction when he heard the buttons pop. He anchored her with one hand under her hip while the other slid under the ugly grey skirt to glide up her long creamy thigh.
“You make me crazy,” he growled against her lips.
Her answer was to dig her fingernails into his shoulders. Jack was long past thinking with his brain. He wanted this woman and he wanted her now. It felt like he’d been waiting for her, frustrated and angry, for a very long time.
“Am I interrupting something?” Marianne’s prim, but amused voice disturbed his thoughts.
He pulled his attention away from Davy, who looked equally dazed.
“Yeah, get lost,” he told Marianne.
Her eyebrows arched. She turned her attention to Davina. Apparently Jack’s opinion wasn’t worth anything.
