You Drive Me Crazy (The Blackwells of Crystal Lake 2)
Page 8
Sean McAdams had never left Crystal Lake and was currently unemployed having recently been laid off from his last job. He’d moved back in with his parents, and though it was a blow to his ego, he was enjoying the home-cooked meals and the fact that his laundry was done and folded neatly on his bed. He wasn’t interested in dating, but rather preferr
ed random hookups. According to Sean, “They’re hot, man.”
Then there was Calvin Andrews. The guy was a bona fide chick magnet. Always had been. His coloring was inherited from his African-American mother, while his light blue eyes were a direct gift from his Nordic father. It made for a combination the ladies seemed to love. With a big laugh and stories for every occasion, he’d been one of the guys Wyatt missed most when he’d left town. Now a marketing genius living and working in Chicago, Calvin was recently divorced and not particularly interested in a serious relationship.
Jarret was another one of those guys who’d stayed in Crystal Lake and taken over his father’s business. Specializing in custom homes, the company was flourishing with all the dollars pouring into the area and the new developments across the lake. Still single, he was looking for that perfect girl but losing hope he was going to find her in this small town.
“What about you, Blackwell?”
Startled, Wyatt glanced up at Calvin. “What about me?”
“You got a lady or you still playing the field?”
The guys looked at him expectantly, and he shrugged, clearing his throat. “I’m not with anyone, if that’s what you mean.”
Sean elbowed him and guffawed like a damn donkey. “That’s not what we mean. Buddy, you’ve had the opportunity to get your hands on some grade-A pussy. We want details. In particular, the goods on what’s her name, the Hadley twin you’ve been banging?” Sean’s eyes widened as he thought hard, and then a big smile spread across his face. “Marissa. Yeah. That’s the one.”
Wyatt shot the man a look. Pussy? Since when did grown men use words like that? Hell, he’d never spoken that way when he was a teenager, and if he had, his father would have kicked his ass all over Crystal Lake and back.
“You’ve been with Marissa Hadley?” Calvin looked shocked and impressed all at once.
Uncomfortable with the attention, Wyatt gave a half shrug.
“Yeah,” Sean answered for him, slapping him on the back once more. “The Victoria’s Secret one. Not the other one.”
“Way to go, bro,” Calvin murmured with a wink. “That’s something.”
Wyatt supposed most guys would think that. But in fact, being with Marissa was about as far from “something” as you could get. Constantly worried about her looks and waistline and carbs, the woman ate less than a bird, smoked two packs of Marlboros a day, and spent more time looking in the mirror than the evil queen in Snow White.
He wasn’t exactly sure what they had, because other than sex (and it wasn’t all that good), they didn’t do much else. He’d accompanied her to some parties, and she’d shown up when he was in Daytona or at his place in Miami Beach.
Truth was, he hadn’t talked to her since she’d visited him in the hospital after the crash, and Wyatt hadn’t realized that fact until now. So there you have it. Not much substance.
“Hey, isn’t that Carly Davis?” Jarret’s head was cranked at an unnatural angle as he tried to see over the crowd.
Wyatt sat up a little straighter. Carly Davis. Now that was a blast from the past. His buddy Jarret had had a huge crush on the girl all through high school, but she’d dated Dan Hutchens right up to graduation. She’d been best friends with—
“Who’s with her?” Calvin was looking now and gave a low whistle. “She looks familiar. Is that…”
“Regan Thorne.” Wyatt spied her right away. They were near the bar, and she was smiling up at Nash, who leaned close to hear whatever it was she was saying. The two looked pretty damn cozy, and Wyatt’s jaw tightened as he studied them. He was irritated. Now why the hell hadn’t she smiled at him like that?
“Really?” Calvin shot a glance at Wyatt. “That doesn’t look like the Regan I remember.”
“No shit.” That was from Sean. “She left for college a four-eyed geek with a little too much junk in the trunk, and came back a total babe.” He sat back and shook his head. “I’ve been trying to get in her pants ever since she came home, but so far, no go.”
Annoyed, Wyatt dragged his gaze from Regan. “Do you actually listen to the shit that comes out of your mouth? Or do you just let that thing ramble on, hoping the limited brain power you’ve been blessed with makes you sound half-human.”
Sean just smiled and rolled his eyes. “Calm down, buddy. I’m not saying anything you guys aren’t thinking. Besides, I’m don’t mean anything bad by it. I’m giving the chick a compliment.”
Wyatt thought back to the woman he’d encountered in the ER. Somehow, he was gonna guess she wouldn’t take too kindly to Sean’s compliment.
“She still live in Crystal Lake?” Calvin asked.
“Sure does,” Jarret replied. “She took over Doc Hogan’s practice and works at the hospital too.”
“I thought of changing doctors. Wouldn’t mind her hands on me.” Sean was practically licking his lips.
Disgusted with the locker-room talk coming from the grown man sitting across from him, Wyatt got to his feet without another word and pushed through the crowd. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing, but he was a guy who trusted his instincts, and at the moment, his instincts were all up in Regan Thorne’s business.
