“I am.”
“You forget my number?” She offered up a slow, sexy smile. But Wyatt saw the hopeful look in her eyes and glanced away, feeling more than a little guilty.
“I’ve been busy.”
“With anyone I know?”
Daisy wasn’t giving up, and Wyatt needed to nip this in the bud. The thing was, he didn’t know where he and Regan stood. Was Sunday just a one-off? They’d agreed that maybe dinner on Thursday would be good. Regan had a busy week, so they’d left things causal. But hell, nothing about what had happened between them was casual.
He scowled. At least not for Wyatt.
The song ended, and he took a step back. It wasn’t late—barely eleven—but he faked a yawn and stretched out his neck, rolling it from one side to the other.
“It’s been nice catching up, Daisy. But I should go.”
Daisy smiled and looked up at him. The move was coy, playful, and he knew where it was headed before she opened her mouth. “You want some company?”
There was a time when Wyatt would have been all over this. Hell, up until a few weeks ago, he wouldn’t have thought twice. He would have said, Hell ya, grabbed Daisy, and taken her back to his place for a hot night of sex and no regrets.
But a lot can change in a few weeks, and even though she was sweet and nice and a good time, Wyatt wasn’t into it.
“I don’t think that would be a good idea.”
She watched him closely, that small smile slowly fading. “Okay,” she whispered, a thoughtful look on her face. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“Did you manage to melt the ice queen?”
The thought of Regan did all sorts of things to him. Things he didn’t want to think about too closely. He shrugged.
“I’m trying.”
“And how’s that working out for you?”
“Honestly, I have no idea.”
“Well.” Daisy stood on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Let me know if you crash and burn.”
Wyatt watched her walk away. He pulled out his wallet and tossed cash onto the table. Sean was tonsil-deep in Trish’s mouth—some things never changed. He checked his phone, but there was nothing from Regan.
He thought about calling her, but she was most likely in bed. And he didn’t want to come across as a needy son of a bitch. Wyatt decided it was better to let her come to him. She was a strong woman, and if this—whatever this was—was going to work, she’d be the one driving the car so to speak. Not him.
Wyatt smiled at the thought as he headed out into the Michigan cold.
Chapter 16
Regan was irritated.
Hell, she was beyond irritated, and the fact that she’d jumped over that particular line made her more irritated than whatever the heck described how she felt. What that word was exactly, she didn’t know. All she did know was that irritated didn’t quite cover it. She thumped her fingers along the edge of her desk and decided not to think about it anymore.
Damn Violet and her thirst for gossip.
Regan jumped out of her chair. She had one last patient to see and then a visit with her favorite youngster. The infection surrounding Patrick’s brain had responded to his new med
s, and he’d been released the day before. She passed Lynn in the hallway and, after a quick conversation, headed to exam room two. She knocked once and entered, smiling when she spied one of her favorite people ever.
Mr. George Darville.
