I didn’t know, but I really wanted to find out.
Badly.
When the cocktails arrived, I laughed. “Tequila sunrise? Perfect.”
“Good choice?” His smile was hopeful and even a little anxious, and it only made me want him more. It was strange, this want that pulsed through me at the sight of Andrew, the deep timbre of his voice, the easy way he gave away smiles. I’d spent so many years focused on my career that this desire hit me like a tidal wave.
“Great choice.” The cocktail was delicious and I couldn’t stop smiling. “Is this cocktail a hint of where you want to be when the sun rises?”
His blue eyes widened. “Wow.”
“Too forward?”
He shook his head and my heart raced. Was this rejection? “Not at all, just a little unexpected.”
“I’m trying something new with you.” Even though I finished my residency a few years ago, I’d been working my ass off to gain as much knowledge and experience as I could in the operating room. I didn’t wish for little kids to have heart problems, so I chose a location that would give me the most opportunities to study heart defects and other heart related problems. “Being straightforward.”
Andrew lifted his glass in the air and smiled. “To beautiful straightforward women.”
“Cheers.” His smile felt like a caress that slid from my neck to my shoulders, followed by his lips. His tongue. His teeth.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing what you look like backlit by the sunrise.”
Holy hell! Did he really just…yeah, he did. “One question, Andrew.”
Something flashed in his eyes, as if he was about to tell me he had a wife and kids at home, or something even worse than that. It faded as quickly as it appeared, and Andrew leaned forward.
“Ask me.”
I took my time, building tension as I finished off my delicious cocktail and licked my lips. “Your room or mine?” It was the boldest I had ever been when it came to men and sex, and I was hopeful it would pay off in a big way.
Andrew stood, pulled a few bills from his pocket and slammed them on the table, a dark, hungry look on his face. “Whatever room comes first,” he growled and reached for my hand, tugging me through the restaurant and down the street until we reached our hotel. “Room number?”
I blinked at the heat in his eyes and a shiver stole over me. “Six-nineteen.”
He smiled. “Twelve-twenty. Your room it is then.”
Inside the elevator, drew used his big body to shield me from the camera as he devoured my mouth, suckling my tongue and teasing my lips with his. His big hands cupped my face, making me feel even smaller than the petite frame I possessed. His body pressed against mine, telling me exactly how eager he was for what came next.
The elevator door slid open on the sixth floor and we stepped out together, smiling, unable to look away from one another as step after step brought us closer to my room. Closer to our clothes being off and our bodies being fused for the rest of the night.
My hand shook, which rendered the keycard ineffective. Andrew’s hand covered mine, the front of his body pressed against my backside as he used my fingers to slide the key back inside slot. The light flashed green and the door clicked, and a moment later we were inside. “Here we are,” I said, sounding breathless and eager.
“Here we are,” he echoed, lips curling into a satisfied smile.
“Now what?”
Andrew crossed the room and scooped me up in his arms. My legs wrapped around his waist and my fingers tangled in his hair. “Now, we find a way to keep ourselves busy until the sun comes up.”
And that’s just what we did. We amused ourselves all night long.
Drew
“You’re late.” My sister’s disapproving green stare met mine when she opened the door, belly swollen with two baby girls who would make their debut any day now, cheeks flushed.
“Are you all right?” I reached out and pressed the back of my hand to her cheek.
Suzie smacked my hand away with a frustrated sigh. “I’m fine and I love you for your concern, but you’re still late.”
I nodded to acknowledge her words. Suzie and I tried to get together at least once a month for dinner, to stay connected to the only family we had left. It seemed ridiculous in a town as small as Jackson’s Ridge, but Suzie ran the hospital and I worked all hours in the operating room, so it took some planning to find a few hours for us to get together. That would change I was sure, when the babies arrived, and even more when Gavin’s tour ended and he settled in town.
“Surgery ran late. I got here as soon as I could.”
Suzie nodded and took a step back so I could enter. “I figured, but I was worried.”
