“Emilia?”
She said nothing as I pulled her shirt over her head and began washing the blood off her. Pink-tinged water cascaded over her bare breasts before soaking into her blood-caked jeans and coming away crimson.
“Emilia, look at me.” I pressed my finger beneath her chin. “Are you hurt?”
She didn’t answer, but I couldn’t see any injuries.
“You gonna tell me what happened?”
The sound of the water splashing over her body was my only answer. Questions burned through my mind, and if she were anyone else… But she wasn’t anyone else. She was mine. And still every bit as innocent and scared as when I’d first found her in that motel room with a gun to her head. Too innocent for blood and murder and wars she didn’t understand.
“I killed him,” she whispered.
On a sigh, I dropped onto my ass beside her, the water soaking through my jeans. I pulled her into my lap and clutched her to my chest. “It’s okay, piccola.”
And that was when she fell apart.
Ugly sobs wracked her whole body, fingers knotting in my shirt like she couldn’t get close enough, like I could save her from her torment. And I would try. I would hold her and piece her back together and never let her go because I was falling in love with her. And love drove men to madness.
