Her Best Men - Page 84

“Got her checked in,” Katie said. “I think the massage is what did it for her.”

“I think so, too,” I said with a grin. “Wanna come in and sit down?”

“For a bit, yeah.”

She sat down and crossed one leg over the other. Her dress fell a little bit up her thigh, exposing that beautiful skin I’d had at my fingertips last week. I swallowed hard and tried to peel my gaze back up to her eyes, but I knew I’d been caught staring. She was grinning at me as her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, then she scooted her dress down her legs.

“I haven’t been able to stop thinkin’ about you, Katie. I’m sorry,” I said.

“Don’t be sorry. You’ve been on my mind, too,” she said.

“How are you feeling? You know, about things.”

“I’m confused,” she said.

“I think we all are,” I said.

“What do you mean?”

“We’re all confused, too. We want ya to have what ya want, but at the same time, I can’t help but admit that I want you. Bad. Just like they do.”

Katie nodded as the conversation came to a jarring halt.

“You know you can choose whoever ya want, right?” I said.

“Dylan, I don’t think this is—”

“It’s okay, Katie. It really is. I heard you finally slept with Caleb. I figured it was gonna happen so you could make an educated decision on who you wanted to choose. I just want you to know that whatever you decide to do, it won’t affect your positions here. You can work here as long as you want, no matter who you choose to be with.”

“Thanks. I think,” she said.

“You think?” I asked.

“You’ve blindsided me with this conversation is all,” she said breathlessly.

“I didn’t mean to. I wanted you to know where I stood. I’m not gonna sit here and lie sayin’ that I don’t care who you choose because I do. And I hope it’s me. But I also want you to know that no matter what you choose to do, you’re always gonna be special to me and an asset to this place.”

I was trying to make her feel better, but she was pulling away from me. She was shaking her head and tears were welling in her eyes. I hadn’t meant to make her upset.

“Katie, I didn’t mean—”

“Please stop,” she said. “I’m tired. And today’s going to be a long day. I need some air. I’m sorry.”

“Katie, wait.”

I rose from my seat as Katie darted out of my office. I rushed to the door as she barreled out of the resort, making her way into the parking lot. I saw her dabbing at her eyes, and I chastised myself. I felt like I had majorly screwed up this entire situation by trying to settle her mind as to the decision she had to make. She knew, right? She knew we all knew. We were brothers, for crying out loud.

CHAPTER 29

WYATT

The week had been long, and I was ready for it to fuckin’ be over. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get Caleb’s cheeky fuckin’ grin out of my head. Walking in on him and Katie Tuesday had been enough for me. The way her cheeks had been flushed, and the smell that poured from her office. I wasn’t a damn idiot. I knew exactly what the hell had taken place.

It made me angry that I was angry. After all, I wanted Katie to be happy. I loved her more than I was willing to admit. I wanted her to choose the path she wanted to take, and I wanted to walk it alongside her. I thought if I showed her a taste of what she could have with me, it would’ve been a no-brainer decision.

Yet she went and fucked all my brothers.

Maybe Katie wanted to be shared. Maybe that was her intention. But as I sat in my office trying to find new ways to market our resort in Charleston, all I got was angrier. Every time I closed my damn eyes, I saw the two of them in that office, smirking and giggling and keeping their own little secrets. The stench of them had been hot, and it pissed me off that Caleb had desecrated her office like that. She was supposed to feel safe here, and I felt like she’d been thrown to a pack of ravenous dogs.
