The Fix Is In (Torus Intercession 4) - Page 92

Walking back to the edge, Benji was telling me about a job in Chinatown he was going out on the following day.

“Mr. and Mrs. Yang think they might have a spirit in their garden. Their son, however, thinks they have racoons.”

I chuckled. “Well, you’ll know tomorrow. I wish I could go, but I’m meeting with clients all day.”

The way I had explained it to my boss, I didn’t want to take advantage, and I knew he needed fixers who traveled. I would give him my two weeks and—

It turned out that the most important travel to Jared Colter was his own. Being in charge of the office had limited him, and that wasn’t what he wanted. He explained to me that he had two teams. First, there were his fixers, headquartered in Chicago, and second, there was his team of private security contractors, mercenaries, except they worked for him and no one else. When people needed more help than Torus could provide, usually outside of the US, that was where the traveling came in. He needed to be on the ground with those men and had not been for far too long. With me taking over the Torus office for him, his life would suddenly become manageable. I was happy to step in to help my boss, who had always been so very good to me. It also afforded me the life with Benji I’d always dreamed of.

Benji, on the other hand, had gone back to doing what made him happiest, facilitating a happy ending for the dead. He was a paranormal investigator in Chicago, and was booked solid the first week he was in business. The only difference between then and now was that, instead of having Sian and Delly work with him, Owen was so far his only backup.

“Owen has a very calming aura,” he apprised me.

I took his word for it.

Back inside the warm house, I took a seat by the fire, with Benji on my lap, his legs curled up and his arm around my neck. He was arguing with Tiernan, a lively debate about demons and ghosts, and others were throwing out theories. What I loved was how seamlessly he fit into my family and how much everyone adored him, from my father on down to the youngest grandchild. When I looked up, I saw my mother’s smile, finally content that her youngest had found true love. What more could a mother ask for?
