It made him want her even more.

People said that men always wanted something that couldn’t be attained, and for the first time in his life, Daniel tasted defeat.

He wouldn’t allow it.

She was the prize he intended to win.

“I anticipated this type of reaction from you, and naturally, I have come prepared.”

Daniel took out a folder containing a dossier his private investigator had gathered about Charlotte. “Let’s see. Currently, you’re living on your own since your grandmother passed away. You have no living relatives except your biological mother, who is currently being treated at Bellevue for chronic dysthymia and suicidal tendencies.

“You graduated from high school with the highest score in the tri-state area, but you refused the scholarships offered by Dartmouth and Cornell. Instead, you exiled yourself to the confinement of your grandmother’s house for two years, living exclusively on your savings until your grandmother died five years ago. Then you were forced to sell the house and move into your apartment in Water Garden.”

Charlotte looked irritated and tried to snatch the folder, but Daniel moved his hand away.

“You spied on me? This is invasion of privacy.”

“Not quite. That information is a matter of public record. But the following might not be. You love spicy food and chocolate, and you have a pet chicken named Silkie—like the breed name—that you hide from your landlord. The clothes in your wardrobe are black, and for some reason, all of your T-shirts are related to Doctor Who characters. Your favorite soda is Dr. Pepper, favorite music is a band called the Arctic Monkeys, and you have an extensive collection of graphic novels and Japanese manga at home.”

“You are spying on me!” She tried to steal the folder again.

Daniel couldn’t help himself any longer.

He grabbed her gloved hand and pulled her to him. She lost her balance, landing straight on his chest. Daniel lifted her chin up and kissed her mouth.

She froze.

He was shocked. The moment their lips touched, an electric thrill ran through his veins. His primal desire awakened and demanded to be released. The arousal hit him so fast his head spun. A moan escaped his throat.

Charlotte tried to push him away, but he wouldn’t let her off that easily. His cock tented in his expensive tailored trousers. It was so hard it hurt. He pinned her against the seat, kissing her until she looked about to faint.

Daniel released her.

He locked his gaze on her.

For a long moment, Daniel couldn’t find his voice. Her scent. The sweetness of her lips drove him insane. The beastly part of him wanted more.

To mark her.

To claim her.

Triumph swelled in his heart. He’d kissed plenty of women in his life, but no one had ever made him like this.

No one.

The wild urge unmasked his façade leaving him in his primal state.

“Now, do you still want to deny the bond between us, Charlotte? The chemistry between us?” He called her by her first name as he leaned closer and whispered into her ear. “If kissing makes us like this, just imagine when we share the ultimate intimacy.”

Charlotte stared at him wide-eyed.

“You’re mine, Charlotte.”

He vowed to claim her and make her understand that she belonged to him.

Very soon.
