I nod my head in agreement, hoping that she’ll slither away and scrutinize someone else.

She doesn’t.

“You’re avoiding me.”

Grinch snorts a laugh, but Slick doesn’t pull her attention from me.

“Other than introducing yourself last night, you haven’t said a word to me.”

“I’m not avoiding you.”

“Do you have a problem with women, or just a problem with women on the team?”

“Neither,” I argue, and it’s the truth.

“You sure?”

Is that a glint of humor in her eyes, or does she honestly see something in me that says I don’t like Cerberus having women?

“Positive.”

“Then you’re afraid I’m going to get inside your head.”

“No,” I lie.

“Ah, there it is.” She grins, pulling another laugh from my friend.

“Would you stop,” I hiss, but then I narrow my eyes as I’m hit with a realization. “Were you hired for us?”

Grinch takes a step back as if he’s been slapped. “Kincaid wouldn’t do that.”

I can tell by his tone he doesn’t believe his own words, or there’s at least some doubt in his mind.

“He wouldn’t,” Slick says, quick to agree with him. “I’ve been hired to help since my background is in victims’ services. Sometimes I just can’t turn it off. I find men very interesting.”

“I’ve got something incredibly interesting in my pants, if you’re interested.”

We all turn our attention to Aro. The man is massive, at least six and a half feet tall, and his muscles make him nearly as wide.

“No thanks, but I would recommend a round of antibiotics,” Slick says without missing a beat.

“I don’t need antibiotics. There’s nothing wrong with my dick,” Aro argues, but there’s still humor in his tone.

We’re all in peak physical condition, and with that comes regular STD checks. The higher-ups know just how we tend to burn off excess energy once we’re home from the missions. I also remember the physical and psychological tests given before acceptance into Cerberus. Aro is, in fact, clean as a whistle.

“If there isn’t anything wrong with it, then why would I be interested?” Slick asks, keeping the banter up.

“It’s a great dick,” Aro says as he takes a step closer to her.

“Once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all,” Slick responds, before walking away.

“I have a good dick,” Aro mutters as he watches her walk toward the bar.

“We believe you, buddy.” Grinch claps him on the shoulder before turning them both back to face the pitchers of beer on the table.

I turn my attention back to Faith. She still has her back to this area of the bar, and watching her without approaching is the best and worst torture. I have no idea why I’m a little obsessed with her. Maybe it’s because she rejected me and that doesn’t happen often. Maybe I just really like the way she looks in those jeans. Her sweater covers every inch of her from neck to wrists, but I have a very active imagination. The way her blouse pulled in the middle over incredibly generous tits didn’t go unnoticed when I saw her at work the day I took Apollo and April for their appointment.

She’s just sexy as hell.

“No bar fights tonight,” Grinch warns when my back muscles tense as a man approaches the pair at the bar.

I don’t respond to him, too engrossed and waiting to see how she responds. Turning in the opposite direction of her friend, Faith chats easily with the guy. I can tell he’s flirting with her by the way he’s carrying himself, and I also notice her friend watching me watch the two of them. We’ve made eye contact more than once tonight, and her smile grows exponentially each time we do. She knows where my interests lie, and it makes me wonder what she’s saying to Faith. I haven’t determined yet if the friend is on my side or not.

The guy smiles at Faith again, but after two long, torturous minutes, he backs away.

Rejected.

I know exactly how that feels, but at least he’s walking away smiling. I bet she didn’t threaten to call the cops on him like she once did me. He doesn’t hold the expression of a man who was just told to fuck off.

My jeans tighten below my belt at the memory of such nasty words coming from her normally professional mouth. Geez, doesn’t she have a clue? Somehow, her rejections turn me on more than I would be if she had agreed to hook up the first time I walked up to her on Cerberus property.

I’m not opposed to a little chase. It makes the catch that more appealing, but normally I’d get a hint that a woman is playing hard to get. Faith has given off no such vibes, and yet, I’m still just as enthralled with her—if not more—than I ever have been.

Faith’s friend smiles in my direction, and it’s not a flirty grin. It’s a knowing one. I grin back, realizing Faith must have at least mentioned me to garner such a reaction from her friend, and that situation in my jeans gets a little worse, a little harder to ignore.
