Only One Mistake (Only One 6)

I look down at him. “Don’t forget to mention we only have five bathrooms,” I joke with him, and he laughs. I grab his face in my hands. “I wouldn’t care if we had five bathrooms or one bathroom.” I want him to know. “I wouldn’t care if we had to live in my one-bedroom condo.”
“I know,” he says softly. “It’s one of the things I love most about you,” he shares, and the only thing I can hear is I love you. I’m about to say something to him when his phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket as if he just didn’t mention the love word. “It’s my dad,” he says, getting up and pressing the connect button.
He puts his arm around me, pulling me to him as Max’s face fills the screen. “Hey, you two,” he says, and I wrap my hands around Michael’s waist.
“Hey,” Michael greets. “We have some news for you guys,” he says, looking at me, then back at his father.
“You guys are getting married!” Max shrieks out with a megawatt smile.
“No,” Michael denies. “Not yet.” My head whips to Michael. “One thing at a time.”
“I’m sorry, what?” I say, and they both ignore me.
“We are moving in together,” Michael says, and Max claps his hands.
“Allison!” he yells. “They found a house.” He comes back to us. “Which one?”
“The white one,” he says, and his father just smiles.
“I had a feeling that would be the one you picked,” he says, and Allison comes into the picture.
“Did you guys pick a house?” she asks, standing in front of Max. Michael tells her all about the house and starts to show her the backyard.
“There is no pool?” Max asks.
“No,” Michael says.
“You need a pool,” he says, and Michael nods his head. “I’m going to call the one who did Cooper’s pool.”
“How much is a pool?” I ask, and he just shakes his head.
“It’ll be our gift,” Allison says, and I just look at the both of them.
“A pool,” I say, not sure I heard them.
“And a tree house,” Max counters. “We also have news.”
“If you tell me Mom is pregnant,” Alex says from behind them somewhere, “I’m going to stab myself in the eyeball and hopefully bleed out.” I hear a laugh I recognize in the back, but I just listen to Allison laugh.
“What’s the news?” Michael asks.
“We bought a house,” he says, and I look over at Michael, who also looks confused.
“You’re selling the house?” he asks his father, and he just shakes his head.
“No, this is your home,” he says and then smiles at Allison. “We bought a house in Dallas,” he says, and my mouth opens. “Zoe sent us one of the listings that you got.”
“Which house?” Michael asks and I put my hands on my head.
“The one with the pool and the slide,” he announces happily.
“The one with ten bathrooms,” I say, shocked. “That house is massive.”
“It’s a little bit smaller than the one we have,” Alex says, then I see Alex’s face come into the screen. “Did you guys pick the one with the big kitchen?” Michael nods, and I’m shocked when I see Julia’s there. I grab the phone from Michael.
“What the hell are you doing there?” I ask her, shocked. “You said you were spending the weekend with your friend.”
“I am spending it with my friend.” She laughs. “Alex invited me for the weekend.”
“Don’t worry,” Max says. “We are bringing her back tomorrow.”
“Bringing her back?” I say. “How, carpool?”
“No.” Alex laughs. “God, no, we have the plane booked.”
“Yeah, of course you guys do,” I say, shaking my head. “This is a little bit too much,” I mumble, and Michael grabs the phone from me.
“Okay, I’m going to let you go, see you guys tomorrow,” he says, putting the phone down and then looking at me.
“Ever since I found you again,” I say. “It went from snail pace to a hundred.”
“We need to call your mother and tell her about the house,” he suggests, and I just look at him. “She needs to know that I’m going to take care of you.” I can see the struggle that he is going through, and I walk over to him.
“Why would you even say that?” I ask. “She knows you’re going to take care of me.” I look around. “I don’t think she knew it would be in a million-dollar house, but she knew,” I reassure him.
He puts his hands on his hips, looking at me. “Is that a bad thing?”
“How spoiled is our baby going to be?” I ask him a question that I don’t even want to know. I don’t even bother to wait for him to answer it. He just smiles at me, the smile that makes me weak in the knees. The smile that makes my heart speed up and makes whatever is going on around me not even matter. The smile that I wake up to and go to bed with. “I love you,” I finally admit to him. He’s about to say something to me, and I hold up my hand. “And not because of your family or who you are. But because all you want to do is make me happy. All that you have done this whole time is put the baby and me before anyone and anything.”
