“Oh.” I wasn’t sure what to say. I wasn’t a big fan of this jealousy thing that kept cropping up, but I wasn’t sure there was a way to diffuse it, either. All my emotions were stirred up and extra hard to manage when it came to Ian. “We’re sort of new.” I glanced at him.

“New fucking—which means epic and freaky, yeah?”

I wasn’t exactly talking shit about him, but it still felt weird. Like I shouldn’t. Things weren’t exactly secret, but a billboard wouldn’t be going up anytime soon about us being a thing. Sabrina liked the hot-rocker-guy angle with no strings. And to be honest, I had too—at first.

Now?

Two women I didn’t know, who didn’t even have designs on Ian, and I’d gone all wolfy-mark-my-mate like some kind of romance novel chick. That didn’t say no strings.

That was strings squared with glue and epoxy.

The scary kind of shit I didn’t want to think about.

“Yeah, that was way too long to think about that question,” Perry said as she stretched out on the couch behind Lark, who was curled on the floor with an array of nail polish and sharp implements that made me twitchy.

“What’s there to say?”

Perry tucked her hand under her head. “O-town, party of many? Or more like fizzle with a side of possibility?”

I glanced at Ian. His chest was rising and falling and his chin was tucked against his shoulder, facing the window.

I turned back to the girls. “O-town with lots and lots of more possibility.”

Lark looked up from using one of her stabby things. “Possibility like, let’s get out the whips?”

I laughed. “Um, not really into that.” I fiddled with my SLR and swiped through pictures. “He’s intense. Stuff with us isn’t like the usual. I don’t know how to describe it.” Besides, I always wanted more. Always.

“Man, I need that with caramel on top.” Perry flung her arm out and pouted. “I’ve only had fizzle lately.”

“Before Ian? Me too.”

“I need an Ian.” Perry glanced at me. “Like Ian, not actually Ian.”

“I didn’t say anything.” I relaxed my grip on my camera.

“You didn’t have to.” Lark waved an emery board at me. “Your eyes got all red and I think there was a bit of steam.”

I laughed. “Stop.”

“No, seriously. Why we’re jealous as fuck.” Lark tipped her head to the side. “Per?”

“Hmm?”

“How much longer till we get to Monterey?”

“Couple hours.”

She looked me over, and I sat up. “What?”

“Perry, grab me the green bag in my purse.”

Perry sat up with a little squeal. “Oh, girl!”

“What’s in the green bag?” I flipped my camera from review to automatic.

“What isn’t in the green bag is a better question.” Perry sat up and plopped a huge bag with a drawstring on Lark’s lap.

Lark dropped the bag in front of her and did this flip, twist thing, and the bag opened wide and every form of makeup tumbled out on the makeshift mat. “We’re going to do a makeover.”
