Into the Light

“YOU’RE LYING! Charlotte, please tell me they are lying? This is a cruel joke you’re playing!”
Charlottes face was covered in tears; I reached out and held onto her hand, which was shaking uncontrollably.
“Adriana, I’m so sorry, I have no words,” Charlotte cried out.
Adriana stood up, unsteady on her feet. My mom stood quickly to hold onto her.
“We are having a baby! In one month this baby comes into this world and you are telling me you only have months to live?!”
“Adriana, I didn’t want to jeopardize the health of the baby,” his voice was barely audible.
“WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT?! THE BABY WON’T HAVE A FATHER!”
The sobs intensified in the room, my mom and Charlotte unable to hide the pain that was unfolding before us. Adriana stood still, not shedding one tear until Elijah stood up and held onto her, both of them falling to the floor as they cried in each other’s arms.
Chapter 26
Elijah Jean Evans
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
