When I arrived at Willa’s cubicle, Dr. Newton was just opening the curtains around it, telling me she’d just finished her examination. “I’ve got things from here,” I told her as I walked up to the bed. “Miss Pope is my patient.” And a whole fuck of a lot more. I smiled at Willa, and my cock swelled when a touch of pink bloomed on her cheeks. So fuckin’ adorable.

Dr. Newton—Portia—glanced up in surprise, then her mouth turned down as she eyed me. “No one said anything about a neuro consult,” she said in a snappy tone as she looked back and forth between Willa and me. I wondered if my obsession with Willa was obvious, but the more likely scenario was that Portia was just being bitter.

She'd been an ice queen and a general pain in the ass ever since she threw herself at me in my office, and I told her in no uncertain terms that I would never be interested.

“She has a concussion,” I told her in a toneless voice. I didn’t want to stir things up, but I needed her to leave.

Portia’s eyes narrowed further, making her already sharp features look even harsher. “It seems like overkill for a mild concussion, Kurt,” she muttered.

My features formed a scowl that would scare the shit out of any sane person. “When you become a neurologist, you’ll be qualified to make that decision. Until then, Dr. Newton”—I’d never given her permission to call me by my first name—“I’d appreciate it if you’d leave me to treat the patient with the head trauma.” I was done playing around. I wanted her gone so I could give Willa my full attention, and if that meant being an asshole, so be it.

Portia cringed and backed up a few steps, her snotty attitude shrouded by fear. “Um, whatever.” After another glance at Willa and me, she spun on her heel and stomped away.

“Get her discharge papers ready,” I called after her, and she threw me a scathing look over her shoulder. However, I was an attending, and she was just finishing up her residency, so she couldn’t disobey me without putting her job in jeopardy. I rarely played the seniority card, but I didn’t appreciate how she’d treated Willa.

I closed the curtains again and finally faced Willa with a smile, letting her consume my mind. Her expression was concerned, but her eyes sparked with interest as they swept over me. I suddenly pictured the look I’d see in those beautiful eyes when they were taking in my naked body. Fuck. I really needed to get myself under control. My cock was pushing against the zipper of my pants, and I had to fight not to wince when the teeth scraped the sensitive skin. There was no hiding my reaction to her. While I had zero issues with Willa knowing how much I wanted her, I didn’t want to scare her with my intensity, and anyone could walk in at any time.

“I really need a neurology consult?” she asked quietly before grimacing and putting her hand to the side of her head.

“You’re going to be just fine,” I quickly reassured her before popping outside the curtain and asking a nurse to bring Willa some medication for her headache. “I’m going to take excellent care of you,” I told Willa when I returned. I winked, and her cheeks dusted with that pretty pink color that I was becoming extremely fond of. I wondered how much of her body would flush with that sweet shade when she was in the throes of ecstasy. I fully intended to find out.

Willa

If I hadn’t already been freaked out over being mugged and having a concussion, hearing that I needed a neurology consult would’ve done it. But there was no mistaking his sincerity, and I believed him when he said I would be fine. Maybe I really did need that consultation since I couldn’t stop myself from wondering about the flash of heat in his dark eyes when he’d told me that he’d take excellent care of me…and hoping it meant he was as attracted to me as I was him. Even though there had to be rules against that kind of thing since he was a doctor, and I was his patient.

After a nurse brought me a couple of pain relievers, Dr. Dabney started asking me questions that echoed those I’d already answered for the female doctor he’d scared off. Until they made a sharp turn into territory that didn’t seem medical.

“Do you have a boyfriend?”

I started to shake my head but stopped when it felt as though my brain was banging around inside my skull. My voice was weak as I replied, “No.”

His lips curved into a pleased smile. “Any family in town?”

“Nope.” I sniffled, thinking about how far away my mom and dad were. When I left for college, I was excited about the distance between us because of the freedom it provided. But now, I would’ve given just about anything for a hug from my mom and the safety my dad provided.
