“The only thing stopping me from hopping on my bike and hightailing it over there to beat the shit out of you is that my daughter would call her mom, and then I’d never hear the end of it about how I’m being a hypocritical ass.”

“I really would,” I mumbled, leaning into Kurt’s side so I could see my dad.

“If you’re gonna be with my daughter, I’m gonna do a deeper dive into you,” my dad warned.

“Look into me all you want. I don’t have anything to hide.” Kurt shrugged. “But there’s no if about it. She’s gonna be my old lady, my wife, and the mother of my children.”

My heart melted as my dad groaned. “Shoulda known better than to let her go halfway across the country to a town filled with bikers when she’s her mom’s mini-me.”

That was the biggest compliment he could give me. My dad was a big, tough guy, but my mom was the tiny dynamo who’d stolen his heart at first glance. As long as it had nothing to do with her safety or mine, he pretty much gave her whatever she wanted. “I really am.”

Kurt’s phone buzzed in his pocket, and he handed mine to me so he could pull his out and look at the screen. “Sorry, gotta take this.”

Kurt stroked his hand down my back before striding out of earshot. I grinned at my dad. “You’re taking this a whole lot better than I expected.”

“Your mom warned me this day would come.” He sighed and shook his head. “At least she’ll be thrilled to have a doctor in the family.”

That was a non-answer if I’d ever heard one. “What about you, Daddy? Are you okay with me dating Kurt?”

“Shoulda known my little girl was going to hitch her wagon to a biker,” my dad muttered, shaking his head. “Not lookin’ forward to losing you to another man, but I’ll learn how to deal as long as he takes good care of you. That ever changes though, there isn’t a place on this planet he can hide from me.”

“He’s been so good to me, even you’d be impressed.” I glanced over my shoulder at Kurt. The knuckles in his hand holding the phone were white, and there was a muscle jumping in his jaw. “Hold on a second. Something’s wrong.”

Kurt jabbed his finger against the screen to end the call and then stomped over to me. “That was one of the hospital administrators. They called to let me know there’s been a report to the medical board about me having a romantic relationship with a patient.”

“Oh no,” I cried, pressing my free hand against my chest. “This is all my fault.”

“Not even close, sweetheart. You didn’t do a damn thing wrong,” he assured me, taking the phone from my trembling fingers.

“But what if you can’t be a doctor anymore because of me?” I buried my face in his chest.

He rubbed my back. “Don’t worry. The hospital is handling it. My license isn’t at risk. I’m not even listed as your doctor on the medical record.”

My head jerked back, and I stared up at him with wide eyes. “You’re not?”

“Nope.” His hand glided up, and he wrapped his fingers around the back of my neck. “Dr. Newton’s signature is on the discharge papers, and she’s the one who did your full exam. I checked over everything she did, but since no additional tests were needed, there wasn’t anything for me to sign off on.”

“If you’re not on her medical record, who would’ve filed the report?” my dad asked.

“The paramedic who was sniffing after her,” Kurt growled. “Tried warning me off at the hospital and showed up on her doorstep the next morning. That’s when I moved Willa to my place. Didn’t want him anywhere near her.”

“Motherfucker.” My dad raked his fingers through his hair. “Knew I shoulda done a deeper dive into the neighbors before I let you move into that damn apartment.”

“Hack’s digging into him for me, and he’s the best in the business. If there’s anything to find, he’ll have it for me soon.”

I didn’t care what they found. He’d messed with Kurt, and that was enough to set off my temper. “Why wait? Let’s go over there right now so I can give him a piece of my mind.”

Kurt shook his head. “Not gonna happen, sweetheart. No way in hell are you ever going to get close to him again. I have a bad feeling about the guy.”

“You need help putting him in the ground, let me know,” my dad offered.

Holy crap. The two most important men in my life were having a bonding moment over the possibility of killing a guy.

“Won’t be a problem, but I’ll keep that in mind,” I told Willa’s dad. My phone buzzed again, and I glanced at the screen, irritated to have yet another interruption. But it was Scout, my VP, so I tapped it and read the message.
