Controlled Burn (Blackbridge Security 8) - Page 81

Larrick strolls across the room, sitting gracefully in the chair at the head of the long scarred table. An overflowing ashtray sits in the center, but that’s all that’s on it other than a literal fucking gavel near Larrick’s right hand.

I won’t disrespect him by taking a seat at the table because I know only members are allowed. Plus, I don’t want to be on that same level as him. He doesn’t seem fazed when I walk closer, literally towering over him. The man is a stone wall, and I can begrudgingly admit that he’s good looking. He’s what some women would probably call gorgeous, but I know too much about his black fucking heart to consider him an equal.

Without a word, I pull a slip of paper from my pocket and toss it on the table in front of him. It slides across the wood, stopping two inches from his hand.

“What’s that?” he asks without picking it up, and I suspect that’s intentional.

Reaching for the thing would be akin to accepting what it says, and he’s been in the game too long to ever do such a thing.

“It’s an address.”

He nods. “A good address?”

I return his nod. “My woman was abducted last night.”

His face doesn’t change. There isn’t a hint of knowledge there, and I bet that’s a skill he mastered many years ago. The man has been hauled in for police questioning a hundred times, I bet.

“Her kids were taken from school.”

I get nothing from him.

“I don’t appreciate my family being fucked with,” I growl, letting my emotions get away from me. “That address is to the safe house the feds are using for Ty Penman.”

And there, right at the corner of his left eye, is the only reaction I need. One little twitch gives me hope that I can resolve all this shit and get the heat off Kendall and her kids.

“You know what giving me that address means.”

It’s not a question, and he’s well aware that he doesn’t have to ask it. The man could easily take the address, shoot me in the head, and bury me in a shallow grave, but I get a feeling he’s a little more honorable than that. At least I pray he is.

“I know.”

“I thought Blackbridge stood for integrity? Thought all of you were law-abiding citizens and do-gooders?”

“I will burn the world down to protect my family, Larrick,” I growl. “One less piece of shit walking the earth is of no fucking concern for me.”

“His blood will be on your hands,” Larrick counters.

“I’ll sleep easy at night.”

“Will you?” he challenges.

“The attacks on my family will stop,” I demand, and I can tell by the way his eyes light up that he’s a little impressed.

Larrick looks from the paper and back to me twice before he uses one finger to slide it closer to him. He doesn’t pick it up and read it in front of me, and I’m sure that’s just one more protective measure he’s going to take.

“I don’t have a clue what’s going on with Kendall, but I’ll wager that all of her bad luck has dried up.”

I know it’s the best I’m going to get, but it also feels like a promise. I suppose I’ll have to take him at his word.

I would never compromise someone else, and that’s the only reason I’m providing that information to him. Ty is terrified of the shitstorm coming from the Keres MC. The feds aren’t even holding him. They leave him alone at that safe house, so I’m not putting an officer in danger.

I won’t tell Larrick any of this. If he’s as diligent as I’ve heard he is, he’ll scope the place out before taking action.

“Was there anything else?” he asks, sitting back and steepling his fingers at his mouth. “Considering joining?”

“No,” I hiss.

“Then get the fuck out of my clubhouse.”

I don’t waste a second striding away or apologizing when I swing open the door and it hits Dirty in the face.

I’m halfway back to the condo when I get a text from Wren.

Wren: Hurry the fuck up. Shit’s going down.

I press my foot harder on the gas. I know they aren’t in danger because Wren would’ve said if they were, but I have a feeling about what I’m going to find when I get home.

I saw the distance in Kendall’s eyes before I left.

Chapter 37

Kendall

“We have to wait until Saturday because I have to work all week, but you’ve got a deal,” Wren says with a grin.

Kason narrows his eyes. “I’m really good.”

“You’ll have to teach me,” Wren counters.

They’ve been talking about some app game Kason has on his tablet for the last hour, and as each minute passed, I’ve grown more and more anxious.

My plan was to leave before Finn got back, but if Wren and Whitney don’t leave soon, I’m going to have to figure something else out. Finn is too reasonable to let me load up the kids and leave. He’ll beg me to stay, and when I still walk away, I’ll be even more heartbroken. I think I’m more scared of him being perfectly fine with me leaving than anything else.
