She melts against me, our lips sliding together. Already I’m hardening. I could so easily take her here, in my bed, with no one the wiser.
But the whole blessed town is outside on our property.
“You just wait until tonight,” I say against her ear. “You just wait.”
Mom and Aunt Marjorie are helping the caterers serve dinner when Callie and I return. Dad, as the man of the hour, is up first, which is strange. Usually we let our guests eat first.
“You hungry?” I ask Callie.
“A little.” She casts her gaze around the crowd.
“Looking for something?”
“Yeah, Rory. Brock’s going after her big time.”
“Damn,” I say. “I told him not to do that.”
Callie punches my arm. “You knew about this?”
“Brock has the hots for your sister. Then again, every single unattached guy here probably has the hots for your sister.”
“They do know she’s bisexual, right?”
“I think it’s pretty well known. It doesn’t seem to bother Brock. In his words, ‘it’s hot.’”
Callie shakes her head. “I know Rory used to be the town siren, but those days are long gone. And Brock…”
“Is a known womanizer. I know. Of course, so was I before I fell for you. We can be reformed.”
“Brock is a lot younger than you are, Donny. I can’t see him settling down anytime soon.”
“Truth be told, neither can I. But Rory’s a big girl. I’m sure she can handle herself.”
“She can,” Callie says, “but I have a bad feeling about this.”
“Why?”
“The thing with Raine hit her pretty hard. And she has…other things on her mind these days.”
“The Lamone thing. I know.”
“I’m actually not talking about Lamone. Donny, Rory really wants to have a baby.”
I let out a gale of laughter. “Then there’s nothing to worry about. Brock is so not ready for that. All Rory needs to do is mention that little fact, and he’ll go running.”
Callie laughs then too. “I never thought about it that way. If Rory wants a one-nighter with Brock, I guess she can have a one-nighter with Brock.”
“Who even knows if it’s going to get that far?” I say. “Rory may just be doing a little flirting. Brock’s a good guy at heart. If Rory isn’t interested, he won’t push it.”
“I know that. Still, I wonder where they are.”
“The food is out, which means Brock will sniff that out eventually. That man can put away more food than my brother and me combined.”
“Really?”
“Oh yeah. Frankly I don’t know how he stays in such great shape. It must be all the swimming he does.”
“Right. I remember. Maddie always talked about what a big champ he was. I think he was a senior when she was a freshman or something.”
