“Only the truth.”
“How much of it?”
“Enough to leave her wanting more.”
“Is this payback?”
“I’m sorry?”
“For Kimberly. For what happened with her?”
“You fell in love. She fell in love.” He shrugs a shoulder, but I see there’s more in his eyes. “What sort of payback are you expecting?”
“I took her from you. Now you want to take Isabelle from me.”
“I offered Isabelle my protection.”
“She doesn’t need your protection. She has mine.”
“But I believe her question is who will protect her from you.”
“Not your problem. Stay away from her.”
“Isabelle came to me. Not the other way around. And she had questions.”
“Which you happily answered.”
“Don’t you wonder where she got the information? That’s what would trouble me if I were you, brother.”
“What do you mean?”
“You have her locked away. She didn’t know you existed, either of us existed, until you took her. How would she know anything about Kimberly? More specifically, about Kimberly and me?”
I must look confused because he continues.
“That’s what she wanted to know. If you stole Kimberly from me.”
I wince at the wording. It’s true though to some extent. They were together. Then we shared her. Then I took her.
“I think your little wife may not be as isolated as you think. She’s getting her information somewhere. I wonder what else she knows. Wonder who is feeding her the information. And, of course, what she’s giving away about us.”
I stand up. “It doesn’t matter. None of it matters anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“I think she’s pregnant.”
He doesn’t say anything, just watches me.
“I’ll know for sure in a few days.”
“Is she aware?”
I shake my head. “As far as she knows she’s been taking her daily birth control.”
“But she hasn’t.”
“I swapped the pills out.”
