I pause when I see my sheets are gone from my bed but my comforter is folded up.

“We’ll get some new sheets today.” Kane steps into my bedroom. With him in here, the room shrinks in size.

“What happened…” I trail off, my face flushing at the realization of why he threw them away. Kane smirks. I roll my eyes, but my annoyance is fake. It’s hard to be annoyed when the dimple in his left cheek comes out. I go back to looking for my phone.

“Nightstand. I put it on the charger.”

“Thanks.” I grab it, seeing I have no missed texts or calls. I text my brother to see what he’s up to and ask what time I should expect him home.

“Come eat. I’m sure he’ll text. He’s a teenage boy, and it’s Saturday morning. He’s probably still sleeping. I’m sure they stayed up most of the night.” He takes my hand and guides me back toward the kitchen to eat breakfast.

I let him, knowing I’ll likely let Kane take me anywhere he wants. As much as I want to protect my heart, I know it’s too late. It already belongs to him.

Kane

It’s not surprising her food is delicious, but it’s hard to enjoy it when I know she’s anxious about her brother not texting her back. I know I told her to relax and that everything would be fine, but I still pull out my phone and check the location of Addilyn’s car. When it doesn't load, I text a friend at the precinct to send a patrol vehicle by Carter’s friend's house to see if the car is parked out front. I’ll have to check on the tracker later.

Is it fucked up I put it there? Yeah. Do I care? Not one fucking bit. She’s a young, beautiful girl that lives with her younger brother. I’d think it more fucked up if I wasn’t keeping tabs on her. She’s mine, after all.

“You feeling all right? I’ve never seen you drink before.”

“I only had a few. I was bummed about getting fired and then—” She pauses, peeking over at me. “Then you weren’t there.”

“Did you think I really wasn’t going to show up, babe? I’ve been taking you home for over a month now.” She shrugs.

Right.

Life has let her down a ton, and I’ve gone and added to that by getting her fired. My solace is that she hated her day job. The only reason she stayed at the call center to begin with was because of the benefits, which I can give her at the agency. She always complained about the place, so this is going to work out for both of us. I’ll get to see her every day, and she’ll get as many benefits as she and Carter need.

“You’ll soon realize, Addilyn, that I’m not going anywhere.” She gives me a tentative smile.

I have no problem proving that to her. It’s what I’ve been trying to do from the start. This past month has been to show her I’m not going anywhere. Even when she tries to test me by pushing me, I’ll always stand firm.

I’m sure she’s had so many promises in the past that have been broken, so I'll just have to continue proving to her that I’m in this for the long haul. That I want to spend the rest of my days taking care of her and giving her the life she deserves.

My phone vibrates. I check the message to see it says Carter was at his friend's house but was pulling out when the patrol car drove by. He’s heading in this direction.

“Everything okay?” she asks.

“Yeah, had someone check to see if your brother was at Drake’s.”

“Really?” She gives me a big smile, her eyes warm.

“Yeah, he’s good.” I don’t tell her about him heading this way for fear she might want me to leave. Carter and I have been fine so far, but he hasn’t seen me pressing in on his sister yet. He’s not dumb, though, so he has to know something is up with us.

“I want to ask you something, and I want you to hear me out.” I pluck her out of her seat and into my lap. She doesn’t fight me. In fact, she wraps her arms around me. I was sure there might be some push from her today, but so far, there hasn’t been.

“Okay.” She smirks when her ass brushes against my hard cock. “Are you going to make me mad or something? Are you about to boss me around again?”

“I don’t see it that way.”

“So yes.” She laughs but still doesn’t try to get away from me.

“You know my sister is putting in less work at the office these days.”

“Hart Bonds?”

“Yeah, we’re going to need someone to help out in the office.”

“Kane—”

“Hear me out.” I cut her off. “Do it for the time being at least. If you hate it or think it’s not going to work, then fine. You can look for something else, but it could be something to hold you over in the meantime. Plus, we have really good benefits.” She chews on her bottom lip, which is a good sign. It means she’s actually considering taking me up on my offer.
