When I had finally finished a draft of this book, Peter Bartis told me he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He would receive experimental treatments, and I was convinced he would make it through. Six months afterward I was happy to tell him I had found a publisher, but just a few weeks later, on December 25, 2017, he passed away. I am still filled with grief that Peter did not live to see the publication of this book, but I know that his generosity and kindness will be remembered by everyone who met him. His simple act of inviting me to an estate sale changed my life. After all, he knew exactly what treasures awaited.
