Perfect Strangers - Page 70

“I’m just curious whether this between us is because we are here and it will be over when we go home, or if you’re feeling the same way as I do?”

Her head snapped up, her eyes finding his and moistening her lips she tilted her head. “And how do you feel?”

“When we first met, I loathed you but things have changed between us and I know it’s not been long and I don’t want to scare the shit out of you or anything, but out of all this fake fiancé bullshit that’s going on, I want you to know that you’re the last thing my heart expected.”

She stood staring at him completely expressionless, and he felt his heart drop into the pit of his stomach. Her eyes showed no flicker of emotion and her skin tone had paled.

I shouldn’t have said anything. Fuck, I’m a dick! “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that, Myla. Forget I said anything,” he said somberly and dropped his hold on her hands. He turned to walk away.

“Wait!” She cried with a huge shit-eating-grin appearing on her face. Letting out the breath he had been holding she jumped into his arms and attacked his mouth with hers, “I feel the same way,” she mumbled. His grip on her tightened as she tried to suffocate him with kisses, playfully tugging on his bottom lip with her teeth.

“Myla Fox, is that you?” She heard a disembodied voice behind her. Myla instantly froze, she recognized that voice in a heartbeat. Looking up to the sky she let out a deep roar that had Kai drop her to her feet instantly. Confusion spread across his face as he took in the demented look now sat on Myla’s face, she took a step away from him but didn’t turn around. Kai’s eyes went as wide as saucers and he felt his ass begin to twitch when he finally looked at who was stood behind Myla.

No. Not her! Shit. “Kai, is that you?” questioned Darcy.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

A loud sigh from Darcy pierced through the silent sky, breaking the unnerving eeriness that had shrouded itself over them. Kai found himself unable to tear his eyes away from Myla as he stood mutedly watching her. His throat had closed, feeling like sand paper and a cold sweat had pierced through his skin and slithered its way over his entire body.

Her stance hadn’t changed in the last few minutes, neither had the look of pure hatred that had encompassed itself over her face, and this was what had him suddenly feeling violently sick. He could hear the deep pants of heavy breathing. He watched Myla close her eyes and begin counting quietly, aloud. This is not a good sign.

His eyes momentarily flickered behind her to Darcy, to find her looking their way with a frown on her face and her hands planted on her hips. “Juliet,” he whispered, his voice unsteadily and sounding like a little boy.

She snapped open her eyes, they were cold and calculating, nothing like the warm and loving eyes he had seen five minutes ago, the skin around her eyes became pinched as she narrowed them, silently. Lunging forward, he grabbed her arm and without looking in Darcy’s direction, he pulled her away. It was like pulling a child from the toy aisle, as she dug the heels of her shoes forcefully into the ground, and trying to free her arm from his grip, she hit him with her free hand. “Let go of me,” she hissed.

Pulling her out of view of Darcy, he steadied her against the tree. “What’s going on Juliet, who is she?”

“You tell me, Kai.” She drawled, yanking her arm finally from his grasp.

“I met her the other day, she had a flat and I helped her change her tire, why?” He asked sincerely, struggling hard to understand what was going on.

She clutched her T-shirt in her left hand and began tugging on it then began panting through puffed cheeks.

“I

’m struggling to understand what has you so worked up, Myla. Help me out here and tell me what’s going on.” His hand reached out and touched her cheek. Her head instantly recoiled away from his touch, he balled his fist and let his hand drop loosely to his side. Now I can’t touch her?

“She knows your name?” She gasped with sweat forming along her upper lip.

“Is that what this is about, because she knows my name? Jesus Myla, who is she going to tell?” He scoffed. He slid his hands into his sweat pockets, hung his head and began kicking at something invisible in the grass.

“Fucking everyone. Do you even know who that is?” She chucked her head back against the tree and threw her arm over eyes, mumbling under her breath incoherently.

Do you even know who that is? What does that mean?

“Hello?” called a waiting Darcy, “what are you two doing?”

“Stay where you are, don’t come any closer,” growled Myla as small footsteps could be heard cutting across the blades of grass.

“Stay where I am? Are we playing law enforcement now?” Laughed Darcy. Kai peered around the tree then back to Myla.

“You have ten seconds to start talking, Juliet, before I find out what the fuck is going on from Darcy, do you understand me?” Snapped Kai as he felt his patience begin to wane.

“That. is. Darcy, my. ex. best. friend, Casper’s. fucking. wife!” She hissed with venom oozing from each punctuated word she spat his way.

He suddenly heard the loud ringing of alarm bells go off like a siren in his head, he felt every muscle in his body go tense and his chest deflated instantly leaving him feeling as though he had been punched. I’ve fucked up here, big time. He doubled over and tried not to vomit, then shook his head and winced, “I’m so sorry, Myla. I didn’t know who she was.”

“What possessed you to tell her your name, huh?” She asked incredulously, her eyes now wide and frantic. He could see the panic escalating in them as she waited for his reply.
