“Hope to fuck not. Depends on if one of those women threatened his way of life like my mom did.”

“Right. He’s lucky none of those side pieces have shot him dead.”

“Thank fuck they didn’t and left him to me, instead.”

Easy grinned as he stared at the house a couple of doors down. Yeah, the fucker didn’t deserve to die an easy death. Shade would ensure that Edmund Oliveira suffered while contemplating his life’s choices.

Shade did not play.

Well, he did, but not in a fun way.

“You tell anyone else what happened to you?”

Shade turned his head toward Easy. His face was bathed in shadows. “Chelle. But neither of you know everythin’. Wouldn’t do that to you.”

He wouldn’t do that to them.

It was so fucking bad that Shade telling them the details might scar them for fucking life. People who didn’t even live it.

That was fucked up.

Easy nodded and turned back to watch the house. “Guess I should thank you for that.”

“You’re welcome.”

Easy snorted.

Shade had turned off the music as soon as he’d pulled over, so the two of them sat in silence as they both watched the house.

About five after ten, a light turned on downstairs, as well as the outside porch light. Another minute later the front door opened and a man stepped outside, closing it behind him.

“That him?”

The parking lights on the Beemer flashed and the man took long strides toward it. Easy would guess Oliveira was as tall or taller than Shade.

When Shade didn’t answer, Easy pulled his eyes from the luxury vehicle and put them on his club brother.

Yeah, he had no doubt that was the father. It was evident by how Shade was now sitting stiffly in the driver’s seat with his fingers curled around the steering wheel in a death grip.

“You remember him?”

He could barely hear Shade’s answer. “Yeah.”

“Bet he thinks you’re dead.”

No response.

Easy wanted Shade to stay in the present and not get lost in the past. Shade needed to concentrate on what they were about to do next, so Easy kept talking. “He’s gonna get a helluva surprise.”

Again Easy didn’t get an answer except for Shade putting the van into Drive. He left the lights off as his father backed the sedan out of the driveway and drove in the opposite direction from where the van was parked.

Shade must know Oliveira’s route. Probably from the Shadow named Hunter.

“We gonna head him off somewhere?” Easy asked, still worried Shade would lose himself and not remain in the here and now.

Easy was relieved when Shade finally answered with a, “Yeah.”

“Okay, just say the word when you need me to do whatever you need me to do.”

Shade only nodded this time.

Easy wasn’t sure if he should keep his eyes on the BMW or Shade. So, he did both.

They followed the sedan out of the neighborhood and through a busy commercial area full of strip malls, chain stores and restaurants without managing to lose the vehicle at any of the traffic lights.

About ten minutes later, it turned onto a less busy road without a lot of residences or other vehicles. Even better, it was a road without street lights.

Shade gunned it and closed the gap between the two vehicles. Once he got close enough, he swerved to the left of the BMW and began driving in the oncoming lane until he was next to the other vehicle. “We got his attention?

Easy glanced over to the Beemer and saw a pale face looking at them in surprise. “I’d say.”

Before Oliveira could react, Shade jerked the wheel causing his father to swerve to avoid a collision at the same time speeding up as if trying to get away. Shade stomped on the accelerator until the van was next to the sedan again and jerked the wheel once more, this time only missing the BMW by inches.

With the close call, Easy’s pulse was speeding as fast as the two vehicles. Not only would they be fucked if Shade crashed the van, but so might Easy’s new sled.

“Damn,” he whispered as one of the BMW’s tires caught the soft shoulder and Oliveira lost control of his vehicle. It veered off the pavement and down into a slight ditch that paralleled the road.

Shade quickly pulled forward, parking at an angle on the shoulder to block the BMW from moving forward.

Easy doubted it would. The tires were spinning as Oliveira tried to escape the ditch and, no doubt, the crazy fuckers who ran him off the road.

Shade turned off the van’s lights and they both rushed to get out. They didn’t want their target taking off on foot. Easy wasn’t chasing anyone in the dark in an area he wasn’t familiar with. He doubted Shade was in the mood to go for a run, either.

“He got a gun?” Easy asked under his breath.

“Nothing registered that Hunter could find. That don’t mean he don’t. So, be careful,” Shade whispered back as they approached.
