“Thank you for being so honest with me. Don’t worry; no one else will touch you again.”
“Oh, one more thing, were there any other people you recognized at these parties?”
“I didn’t at the time, no, but once the cat was out of the bag, I guess mom and dad didn’t see the need to hide anymore. The very next time they abused me, all of their friends were there. Bruno, Carlo, Michele, Teresa, Antonio and of course, Luna. They were all there, and so were the other children.”
“Okay, you should get some rest; you two can stay here if you’d like. Natalia, you can take the bed and Jr., and I will stay in the sitting room on the couches in there.” I was still a bit surprised when they took me up on the offer.
I waited until they fell asleep. I’d been planning to spread out my acts of revenge, but this story sent me over the edge. Because they were in the room, I was able to calm myself down enough not to make any mistakes. The first thing I did was send the video to Carlo of his wife and Bruno getting it on in their bed.
You see, even though these monsters like committing acts of depravity on the innocent, they seem to think their spouses are off-limits. A weird quirk if you ask me, but that’s part of their code of ethics among each other. Next, I sent off the recording from the nun, just the bit about Luna. Then I got started on her husband and the story I was going to send to the press.
I’d already compiled one for her, Luna before I knew of his involvement. And last, I sent this new information to Memnon, leaving out my sister’s name, of course.
By the time I woke up the next morning, Teresa had been arrested for the murder of her husband, and the news and Internet were abuzz with the new revelations about the trafficking ring and the parties where children were being violated. Since I’m sure they weren’t the only ones involved, I imagine some of those high-ranking officials Mem had warned me about were shaking this morning.
There was another reason for me releasing the statements now. I saw an easy way to get Natalia and Jr. out of Sicily without too much fuss on their part. I told them what I’d done as soon as they woke up, and they were able to see the truth for themselves by just turning on the TV or their phones. “They’ll come after you and anyone else who might know about this. I have a plane ready to take you out of here this afternoon.”
They looked scared, but I reassured them that everything was going to be okay. Then I started writing my letter of introduction to Ma.
GABRIEL
“Where are the children? What’s going on?” Sal came down to the breakfast table the next morning to find only me in attendance. I’d had some time to think in the hours since awakening and sending them out of the house while waiting for him to show his face.
“What do you plan on doing with your son?” I ignored his question.
“Ah, this is a good question. I have many options, but I cannot decide on any one of them.”
“Tell me about them.” He seemed to realize the change in my tone, but though he looked at me, askance did not make mention of it. “Do you think it’s an easy thing for a man to kill his own son?”
“Is that one of your options?” I didn’t look at him as I continued sipping on my coffee.
“I think you have the mind of my father. He saw no grey area, only black and white. I, too, wished to be like this.”
He seemed to get lost in thought as I waited for what else he had to say. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s an enabler. Anyone who makes excuses for evil is just as guilty of such in my book. At this point in time, even though I’d already sent them out of danger, I was ready to forsake all prior plans and just level this whole place with everyone in it.
If he knew how angry and upset I was as we sat just inches away from one another, he would’ve known to be afraid. “You do not need to worry about it. I will handle it myself. Do you know what I’ve been doing these last few months while you were back in America? I was laying the groundwork to pass everything on to you.”
“I know you’ll find that hard to believe. To you, I’m just the grandpa you just met; there is no real relationship between us. To me, you are the firstborn of my grandchildren; in our family, that means a lot. It does not matter how you came to be niputi; what matters is that you are my blood. So is Alonzo, so is Natalia and her brother and my son Martin.”
