“Thank you,” she said.

He smiled and nodded, taking his place at the head of the table. They didn’t have to wait long to be served.

Evelyn giggled when she saw her plate filled with spaghetti. She grabbed her fork, ready to dive in.

“Manners, Evelyn,” Rain said.

She looked up at her mother and nodded. She put the fork down, putting her hands together in prayer.

He glanced over at Rain and saw the two of them whispering something under their breath, and then mutter a single word before opening their eyes.

“Daddy always wanted to say a prayer,” Evelyn said.

“Dig in, enjoy.”

He twirled the spaghetti around his fork, watching the young girl with the tomato mess, knowing her clothes were going to get wrecked. She didn’t even get a full forkful before her clothes were a mess with tomato sauce and pasta went everywhere.

“Evelyn, smaller bites, sweetheart,” Rain said.

“Sorry, Mommy.”

Rain smiled.

Her gaze jerked toward his, and he couldn’t help but wink at her.

Her cheeks went a beautiful shade of red, and once again, he wondered if Daniel had taken care of her, and if so, how?

He ate his pasta, and it was delicious. He had the best chefs, but it was no steak.

“Evelyn, wipe your face.” Rain picked up the napkin, and Evelyn tried to copy her, but she wasn’t getting any cleaner.

Getting to his feet, he grabbed his own napkin and dipped it into the glass of water he rarely drank. He helped to clean up Evelyn’s face until she was perfectly clean. “There’s a little girl there,” he said.

Evelyn chuckled.

Cake was brought out before he could say anything more, and he noticed how Rain’s eyes lit up at the sight.

He made a mental note to find out all that she liked.

Wolf couldn’t look away as she took a bite of the chocolate cake and her eyes closed as if she was in heaven.

Both of them seemed to love chocolate cake.

After their meal, Evelyn was a mess.

“I should go and clean her up,” Rain said.

“Actually, we need to talk.” He snapped his fingers, and one of the maids who’d worked for him for a long time came scurrying toward him. “Take Evelyn for me. She needs to be washed and dressed. Do not disturb me.”

Evelyn went with the maid as he grabbed Rain’s arm.

“I don’t know who that woman is,” Rain said.

“She is trustworthy.”

She tugged on his hold, and he did no more than bend, shoving his shoulder into her waist and hauling her up.

Her hands started to hit at his ass as he carried her toward his office.

“Let me go, now.”

Her ass was too tempting to ignore and so he gave it a swift slap. She squealed. “Let me go.”

Wolf ignored her, carrying her through to his office and dumping her on the sofa. He stepped back, going to his drinks table and pouring himself a generous shot of whiskey. “Can I interest you in a drink?” he asked.

“No.”

“So you don’t drink either? Tell me, Rain, is being a martyr part of your charm?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She shoved some of her hair off her face. The dress Mitchell had picked out hugged her curves perfectly.

He’d gotten the dress delivered to her shortly before he’d collected her.

Wolf had no problem dining with her in pajamas, but he figured she’d prefer to be properly dressed.

“No? I think you have a long list of sacrifices against your name to last a lifetime.”

She opened her mouth and closed it.

“Nothing to say?”

“Let me and Evelyn go.”

“No.”

“Then I have nothing to say to you.”

He tutted. “I think you have plenty to say to me, but all in good time. For now, I think it’s time to negotiate the terms of your contract, don’t you?”

“Contract?”

“You will be caring for Evelyn and warming my bed. Do you not have any conditions, Rain?” he asked. “Or does anything go?”

She sat up straighter. “You would allow me to … give conditions?”

“Yes, within reason.”

She licked her lips, then bit into her bottom. He loved to watch her, seeing her mind working, trying to figure everything out.

Rain was so damn refreshing.

****

This had to be a trap.

Rain couldn’t figure out why he would give her the opportunity to impose conditions on their time here.

He was her captor. He brought her here against her will.

She stopped biting her lip. It was a bad habit her mother had always complained about. Rain stared at Wolf, waiting to see what he’d do next. He took a sip of his whiskey.

“I take it you have certain conditions?” he asked, taking a seat opposite her.

“I don’t want any harm to come to Evelyn. Not at all.”

He waved his hand in the air. “We’re not talking about Evelyn’s safety. So long as you’re both in my care and you do as you’re told, you will both be fine.”
