I hurry after him so I don’t get stuck alone with Russ. He’s going to be a problem and as soon as I get home, I will warn Pie and we will have to spell him again.

Russ Roth follows me, grumbling the whole way back.

When we reach the parking lot, all the pussies are in the back of the truck, ready to go. No one says anything. Big Jim gets in the driver’s seat, Russ Roth gets in the passenger seat, and I climb into the bed and give Mark a sympathetic pat on the shoulder as I settle next to him.

We end up back at Big Jim’s store, but no one hangs about. Everyone gets into trucks and I walk back to the feed store to pick up mine. The whole way there I think about Madeline. And then there she is. Sitting in the truck, listening to the radio, waiting for me.

She quizzes me about the hunt. But not in a serious way. And then we are practicing our kissing, and letting our hands wander, and making promises to meet up tomorrow.

I wave to her as I pull out of the feed store parking lot, then grin with blissful joy as I make my way back towards Saint Mark’s.

I’m only a few miles out of town when a formidable winged figure lands in the road in front of me.

I reach over, open the passenger door, and Batty slides in.

Laughter is a universal language.

And we speak it all the way home.

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE – PIE

“Beautiful Pie. My beautiful Pie.”

Pell is driving me crazy, whispering these sweet things in my ear. His grip on my thighs is tight as he pushes me against the office door and he slowly moves forward and back.

It’s the slowest, most intense, most absolutely erotic sex I’ve ever had in my life. And even though he’s already delivered the goods once, I’m ready again.

“Pell.” My face is pushed into his neck so I breathe these words right into his ear.

He growls a little, thrusting just a little deeper inside me. Just enough to make me gasp, and then… yeah. I can’t hold it in. So I let it out.

I moan, and wriggle, and writhe against his hard chest. He bites my earlobe, making me squeal, and then I feel his release inside me.

After that we relax a little. His arms tremble slightly as he slowly lowers my legs, and then we’re holding on to each other, a bit weak.

He pulls my panties back up my legs, straightens out my skirt—while shooting me a devious, satisfied grin—then leads me over to the office desk. He sinks down into a plush leather chair, pulling me into his lap. I position myself sideways so I can cling to him and rest my head on his shoulder at the same time.

Then we sigh.

“This is nice,” he says.

“I have no complaints.”

“Good.” He laughs.

“Really though.” I sit up a little, just enough so I can find his eyes. They’re not beastly yellow when he’s a man, but they’re not brown either. It’s something in between. “I needed this night out. I guess I didn’t realize how much I missed the outside world until we got here.”

“I have to agree. There’s no point in dwelling on what you can’t do when you’re in the middle of a terrible, endless curse. But just this little taste of freedom these past few weeks is enough to make me remember what I’ve been missing. I guess I’m a little jealous, too.”

“Jealous of what?”

“You. Going to work every day. In that new world where you fit in.”

“Yeah.” I kinda sigh this word out. “I get that. And I thought that too. At first. But there’s something wrong with that place, Pell.”

“There’s something wrong with every place, Pie. Perfection doesn’t exist.”

“Agreed. But it’s more than that. Tarq is up to something and—”
