Luca
Seeing Angelina so distressed after the great evening we’d shared hurt us both. Her grief beat at us too. We’d seen many of our friends perish over the centuries, never finding their mate to complete their lives. In some ways, we’d experienced so much that it was almost normal for us. Almost. We’d been so close to dying too. If not for this beautiful creature sleeping soundly between us, our lifespan would have run out. And if we’d died… Diane and Michael would’ve followed us as well.
“All we can do is be patient with her, Luca. Be there for her whenever she needs us.”
“Hmm,” I murmured as I ran one finger down her soft cheek. “But I can’t stand the pain she’s in.”
She made a small whimper in her sleep and we bent to kiss her temples. She quietened at our touch.
“She has people around her who care about her. And she and Donna hit it off, as we knew they would.”
I chuckled. “Yeah, I think they’ll make quite the entrance at the welcoming ceremony.”
“Time for sleep now.”
At my brother’s words, we kissed Angelina and fell asleep.
