Bitter Love (Boys of Silver Ridge 3) - Page 60

The week I gave her to realize how hard it is to actually run a rescue is coming to a close. The novelty of it all will wear off and she'll be forced to make the hard decision to find new homes for the horses. The longer she waits the harder it's going to be. I don't want to be right, but I know I am. I've seen many people get in over their heads, thinking they can leave the city, buy some land, and have an easy life raising horses in the country.

Yes, Josie had a horse before and has shown me that she does know what she's doing, but there is a huge difference between having one horse that was boarded and taking care of a barn full of rescues, half of which have special medical needs. It's not just the time and the know-how, but the money. I never discussed with Kim how she was able to afford it, but I got the feeling she was draining whatever savings she had left. It makes sense to me now that I know she didn't have much time left. She wouldn't need the money after she was gone and was able to spend it all on her horses.

Josie is younger, and I have no reason to think she's not in good health. I mean, she certainly looks like she's in perfect health. My mind flashes back to her, and I feel my cock jump as I remember standing that close to her in the barn. Her full lips parted as she looked up at me and I wanted so fucking bad to feel her up against me.

Sam used to swear by fucking people out of your system when they got under your skin like this, but that won't help me in this situation.

It doesn't matter how much I want to bury my cock inside of her, or how much I want to cup her breasts in my hands and flick my tongue over her nipple, which has teased me on more than one occasion by being just slightly visible through her t-shirt.

No, it doesn't matter, because I don't sleep with clients, and I make no exception to that rule.

I turn off the lights, double-check the locks, and arm the system before leaving the barn. The spotlight outside my house has turned on, and I approach slowly, not wanting to get sprayed by the skunk that got two of my dogs not that long ago. It's a nice clear night out and, since it's not that late, I plan on changing into athletic pants, a t-shirt, and taking Piper for a run. I enjoy working out but haven't been able to get to the gym much lately.

The dogs don't come running right away when I step inside, which is odd. I closed the door behind me, and I'm finally greeted by Piper, who comes bounding through the house. Which, again, is odd. She’s your typical German Shepherd in many ways and it’s always by the door as soon as she hears the knob rattle.

“I could have killed you like 20 times by now,” Mason says stepping out of the shadows and into the foyer. “Do you know how easy it was to pick your lock?”

“What the hell are you doing here?” I ask my brother, slowly shaking my head. “And you're just lucky Piper knows who you are, or she would have ripped you to shreds.”

Mason looks at Piper and shrugs. “I've had to fight off my fair share of—”

“I don't want to hear it,” I interrupt, knowing where he's going with this story because I've heard it before. “For real, what are you doing here? I thought you were on some top-secret assignment.”

“I am, but I kind of need to be laying low for a few days.”

“If anyone followed you here, I will be the one to kill you. I do not have time to get caught up in whatever the hell it is you're involved in right now.”

“You really think I'd be followed?” Mason overexaggerates being insulted. “Though, it is always best to blend in with the locals so let's hit the bar.”

“It’s almost nine,” I counter.

“Exactly! The night is young. Come on, how often do I get to hang out with my big bro? Also, your guest room is still clean right?”

I roll my eyes. “You were the last one in it so that's debatable.”

“True. I didn't bring anyone home with me last time so it's good enough.” Mason shrugs and looks me up and down. “I would say go change, but last time we went out, the whole vet thing was working for you. You're going to use your powers for good tonight, right?”

My mind goes to Josie, and I how it might actually do me some good to distract myself with someone else. Someone I can easily forget about when the sun rises in the morning. Someone who doesn't irritate me the way Josie does. And someone I won't have to deal with again when the next accident inevitably happens.
