He raises his eyebrows.

“Oh right. I forgot.”

I wouldn’t have thought it possible but his gaze warms even more.

“You forgot that I’m rich. See what I mean? Refreshing.”

He’s so open with his feelings, something I’m not used to with men. I need to be honest with him, also. Despite the fact that Law never wanted to call himself my boyfriend, I love him.

Loved him.

I shift uncomfortably, determined to make it “past tense” as Law had asked.

Either way I’m not sure if I’m ready to try again. Strange as it may seem, I feel a little protective over Seth. I don’t want anyone to hurt him.

Not even me.

“I just got out of a relationship. Other than two traumatizing first dates, this would be the first time I’ve dated anyone else. I just thought you should know that.”

He nods. “That’s fair. However, I would still like to take you to dinner.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Now it’s my turn to make a confession. I can be pretty persistent when I want something. Just fair warning.”

“Still with me, boss?” Mya asks.

I sit up straighter. “Yes. Where are we on the Bite Me Bakery account?”

After a long day, it’s torture to sit through a bunch of status updates but it’s a necessary evil. Keeping abreast of what projects we have in the pipeline allows me to ensure there are no surprises down the line that might lead to missed deadlines and angry clients.

The headache pounding at the back of my head has nothing to do with overhearing Anya saying she was leaving early for a lunch date.

Nothing at all.

“Okay, what is going on with you lately?”

“What?” Surprised at her tone, I stare at Mya in surprise.

Despite being boss and employee, we’ve always had a friendly relationship. All of my team leads are amazing but Mya in particular has been a crucial part of building the Mirage Agency into the powerhouse it is today. That’s the main reason I made her a VP. Not only that but I like her. She’s fun and generous and always willing to go the extra mile for a fellow employee or a client.

Right now the face that’s usually smiling is set into a distinct frown.

“With all due respect, we might as well not even bother with these status updates since you haven’t heard a single thing I’ve said. The LA office could have burned down for all the attention you’re giving this meeting.” Mya places her notes on the chair next to her.

“Sorry.”

She gets up and then closes my office door. “Talk to me, James. I would like to think we’re friends by now. I just want to help.”

“Nobody can help.”

Mya bites her lip. “Is the agency in trouble?”

“No. Why would you ask that?”
