“Nothing! I just didn’t correct all her errors. She was charging clients the wrong amounts and putting way too few manhours on the estimates. I just didn’t correct her. I wasn’t going to do her job for her.”
“So that’s why they were underbidding us. And eventually they underbid so much that they couldn’t afford to do the work for those prices.”
I shrug. “No idea. It’s none of my business.”
He pulls me into a kiss. “Diabolical woman. I love the way your wicked little mind works.”
The sound of music from inside the apartment catches both of our attention. My parents are dancing to their wedding song while all the guests watch. Law pulls me into his arms and we sway together to the muted strains of the music.
“Do you ever want more for us?”
Lulled by the sound of the music and his warm arms, I hum an agreement.
“Like this?” He inclines his head toward the party.
I follow his eyes to where my mom and dad are dancing. What he’s getting at finally dawns on me.
“You don’t like weddings,” I whisper.
“I like what they represent. I don’t care if you’re wearing a big white dress. All I want is the two of us making promises. Making plans. Sharing–”
“Everything,” I finish for him as I read the unasked question in his eyes.
For a moment we stand frozen, our hearts beating together as the entirety of our future, all the possibilities, hangs there between us. His eyes ask, and my eyes answer, before his head dips for a kiss.
“Everything,” he says and just before his lips cover mine he whispers, “including a last name.”
