Peppermint

Isecure my hair with a ponytail holder as I head to the door. I need to leave for work in just a few minutes and have no idea who is knocking at this early hour. I pull the curtain back and see Officer Whitfield on my porch once again.

“Officer, you’re back. What can I do for you?” I ask when I open the door.

He gives me a fake smile and hands me a photo. This time, it’s a photo of Mason. Damn.

“Is this another case you’re following up on?”

“No, ma’am. This is a person of interest in the disappearance of Dean Hasselmont. Among others.”

I can’t lie and say I don’t know Mason. That would make us both look suspicious. I obviously know him, and I get the feeling Officer Whitfield knows that. It’s why he’s at my doorstep. Is he visiting other members, or am I the only one?

“Do you know that man?” he asks, holding up another picture. “Or this one? Or this one? I can keep going.”

“I know them, but I’m not sure why they would be persons of interest in a disappearance.”

“That’s for me to figure out.”

“I apologize. I don’t see how I can be of any help.”

“Think really hard, Ms. Rogue. You said before you didn’t know Dean Hasselmont. Is that still your answer?”

It’s technically not a lie. I didn’t officially meet him at any time. So, no, I don’t know him.

“Like I told you before, I don’t know him. Do you need anything else? I’m heading out to work.”

“Over at the factory on Industrial Boulevard, right?” he asks, and I nod. “And at Harlots’ Haven.”

He poses it as a statement. I nod again. No point in denying it.

“Have a good day, ma’am.”

“Good luck with your investigation.”

The moment he leaves, I go get in my truck so I can get to work. Halfway there, I get a text from Skylar. He’s been to see her, too. And Allie. Fuck.

“Hey, hon, you find anything else out about that officer?” I ask Ryder, calling him for an update now that I know the officer isn’t going away.

“I was going to come over later when you got off work,” he replies. “Looks like he’s adopted. His real mother, Diana Hasselmont, gave him up for adoption when he was only a year old. I don’t know what that means but thought it could be something.”

“Thank you, sweetie.”

Definitely something. Officer Whitfield is related to Dean. If I had to guess, they’re brothers.
