“Haven’t exactly had the time,” he says stiffly.

Everyone shuffles uncomfortably at the tension between the two of them. The mark has definitely lost all of its power. Perhaps that is another reason that she seems so cozy with Remiel.

“We need to make time,” she says back just as coldly.

“After I have taken my revenge,” Xane says darkly and turns back to the windows to wait for Sebastian to turn up.

Aefre glares at his back but then drops her arms as an understanding look passes over her face.

“Lizzie, can we have that talk now please?” Devon blurts out.

“Yeah, of course,” she says distractedly.

“Aefre,” Constantine says before she disappears again. He pulls her closer and whispers to her, “I love you, my sweet. I will wait for you.”

She pulls away slightly and gives him a suspicious look. He smiles sadly at her and she returns it with a brighter one of her own.

“I love you too,” she whispers. “Let me see what Devon wants and then I will come and find you.”

He nods his acceptance of

that and with all the strength that he has, he lets go of her and watches as Devon leads her away.

He sits back down to also stare out of the windows.

“Why are they not coming?” Xane asks.

“Good fucking question,” Constantine mutters.

The Underworld, October 2014 - Aefre

“What is this about, Dev?” I ask as he leads me into his bedroom. I am getting pretty tired; this day has been a bitch of one so far. I don’t think I can take any more “news.”

“Relax, it’s good. I hope,” he says with a smile and runs his hand through his hair nervously.

That piques my interest. What has him so anxious?

“Okay,” I say and take his hand. “Whatever it is, just tell me.”

He squeezes my fingers, as if in support, and then he lets out a long breath. “I told you in the Fae Kingdoms that I am stepping up, Lizzie. That hasn’t changed, and I…”

“Wait,” I say, holding my hand up. “Before you say anything about me choosing, or being with anyone, let me stop you. After what happened, I just can’t, Devon. I know you can understand that. I need time to get over this and to try and remember what he did to me over there.”

“I know,” he says quietly. “I am willing to wait for you to decide when is the right time for us to get married, but that’s not what this is about. I have missed you. Really, really missed you. Things aren’t the same between us, Lizzie. I tried to pretend that they were because I didn’t want to go back, but I was wrong. I was wrong to turn down your offer and if you are still willing to try then I want you to. I want you to try and re-turn me.”

That hits me pretty hard. I wasn’t expecting that. He was so adamant last time that I thought the subject was dead and buried.

“I have surprised you,” he says with a smile. “I know this has come out of the blue for you, but I have been thinking about it for weeks now. I want that bond with you. I need it. Not for us, not so that you can choose me, but because I miss you and I love you and I want to be that close with you again. It breaks my heart to see how apart we have become lately. It was supposed to be us against the world forever, remember?”

“Yes,” I choke out. “I remember.” He has made my head spin.

“I know things have changed for you now. You have a new sire, which must be Hellishly confusing, especially being who he is, everything that happened in the Fae Kingdoms, and now all of this news about who gets to take over the Dragon Realms. So, I will ask you once and only once and then drop it. Do you want this, Lizzie? Do you want this for us?”

I just stare at him. My thoughts are racing that rapidly, I can’t keep up. I must look like some sort of chump, gaping at him.

“Lizzie?” he presses me. I can see the growing concern in his eyes, and I plaster a smile on my face to reassure him.

“Yes,” I say. “I want this. I have always wanted this with you, Devon.”
