“She wouldn’t,” Cole says, shaking his head. “After everything he did to her.”
“She is a forgiving woman,” Devon says. “Sometimes. She is trying to hide it, but the sire adoration is there. I can see it.”
“Why do you sound so casual about it?” Cole asks. “I thought you wanted her for yourself?”
“Every fucker wants her for himself,” Devon answers. “It’s now about alliances.”
“You made a deal with him?” Cole asks in disbelief.
“Of sorts,” Devon replies, not wanting to go into detail of his devious plan. He just wants to put Cole off trying to come back to her. Lizzie would take him back in a second if she knew he wanted to. If she even sniffed out a possibility, she would come and claim him. As much as Devon misses having him around, he cannot allow that to happen. He wishes he had never come here now. “So, this house is new,” he says to change the subject.
Cole gives him a searching look and with a slow nod accepts it, but Devon can see the wheels turning. “Not really. It’s my old place from before I married Liv. Carolyn wanted to move here. Better neighborhood, better schools,” he says with an absent shrug.
“Nothing like Beverly Hills,” Devon says with a tilt of his beer bottle. “I’m glad you are okay,” he adds, which is what he really came here to say.
“I’ll live,” Cole says.
“Is that it?” Devon asks.
“For now,” Cole says cryptically.
They stand there in the kitchen after that, both completely silent and avoiding each other’s gazes. Devon suddenly starts to feel anxious; his heart starts to pound, and his palms start to sweat.
“I have to go,” Devon says, putting his beer bottle back down on the counter.
“Wait,” Cole says, grabbing his arm. “What’s wrong?”
Devon gives him a level gaze and licks his lips. “My sire needs me,” he says and enjoys the jealousy that he sees shoot across Cole’s face.
“Is she okay?” Cole asks anxiously, his concern for her evident.
“I’ll find out when I get to her,” Devon replies and, pulling his arm free from Cole, he Astraports out, forgetting that he should have left via the door first. Something is wrong with Elizabeth and he needs to get to her immediately. He will worry about Cole’s renewed interest in her later.
And it is definitely something that he needs to worry about.

Prologue
Castellum Aquapontanus, 1498 - Aefre
As I sat at the dressing table in Carlotta’s dark room downstairs, I felt a nervous pang in my stomach. I was going to see him for the first time in six moons. It had been too long. I needed to see him.
“You are nervous to see your sire?” Carlotta asked me, picking up on my anxiousness.
