“Also…” She blushed as she pulled a small sticky note from her pocket. “This is from Bri.”
“Bri?”
A smile lit up my face as I accepted the note. I waited until she left my office to open it. Inside was Brianna’s familiar handwriting, the slanted cursive a welcome sight.
Dinner later? My treat.
I folded the note reverently, tucked it into my pocket, and whipped out my cell phone. I sent her a quick text of affirmation, instructing her to come to my apartment later when it was safe for her. A series of hearts erupted across the screen and my own heart exploded in my chest, affection infecting my body.
My chest seized.
I have to tell her the truth. I tucked my phone into my pocket and closed my eyes, drawing in as much air as I could. I have to tell her before it becomes a problem.
Resolute in my decision, I opened my eyes and drifted into the hallway, committed to seeing through the rest of the day without too many more emotional incidents. Between meeting my ex-girlfriend for the first time in five years, meeting my son for the very first time, and having Brianna over for dinner later, I was quickly approaching my emotional cap.
I wasn’t sure how much more I could take, positive or negative. I knew my limits.
But would the universe respect that?
