His gaze softened, eyes brimming with affection. “I love you.”
“Take me away from here.”
He beamed, standing tall as he helped me to my feet. “Take what you need.”
“I already have that with you.”
“Then, come along. We don’t want to be caught, do we?”
I watched as he slid the ring onto my ring finger. I studied the diamond, the small gem catching the light at every angle. My vision blurred as tears returned.
Marshall hugged me tight to his chest. “Come along. We don’t have much time.”
I understood his urgency. Voices carried far down the hallway, fast approaching us. We went to the balcony doors, undid the latch, and stood on the balcony; hands fastened together as we each tuned in to our inner dragons.
The gold cord was easy to locate and surprised me with its brilliance, the once-tiny string of threaded silk having grown into a fully braided length of rope. I followed the rope, rising and falling with its many twists and turns, enjoying the ride as much as I would flying.
Following the rope felt precisely like flying—and what I located at the end of the rope was so radiantly gorgeous that I couldn’t help the happy tears that sprang forth.
A volcano, massive in all its mountainous glory, rose high into the skyline, a glorious sunrise resting just over the horizon. Golden hues of fiery light washed over the peaks of the mountain as the spout spewed a steady stream of smoke. I squeezed Marshall’s hand.
It was him—he was the volcano. He was my mate, truly, as evidenced by the fact that our corded connections to our dragons were now fully entwined. We were attached whether we wanted to be or not.
Attached whether anyone else wanted us to be or not.
And we would spend the rest of forever exploring our connection.
The voices at the door grew louder, more urgent. I heard a crash. I heard rushed footsteps. I held tight to Marshall, trusting my shifting abilities to take us away from here.
Within seconds, my dragon fully emerged, glittering bright like the golden dawn. I released a roar of triumph as I launched from the balcony, rising after Marshall whose scales brimmed like molten lava. When I closed my eyes, I felt his energy lead me.
I didn’t even have to see where I was going. I simply had to follow him. That was it. That was how my life would be from now on.
And I just couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.
