Epilogue
Two Months Later
Emily
Don't ask me why, but I'm nervous. Tonight, we're telling Drake about Baby Benson. I don't know how we've kept this a secret for so long, but we have. Once we tell Drake, we're going to tell the rest of our family and friends. It's taken us forever to decide how to tell everyone. Well, Drake and my dad mostly. They are the only ones who don't know yet. Dad should have a copy of our ultrasound in his mailbox tomorrow along with a cute card that says he'll be a Grandpa.
All I've been able to do all day is wring my hands over telling Drake. I escape to our bedroom for a few minutes, feeling like I might be sick, and Jake follows me.
“Sweetness?” he questions from behind me.
“I need a moment, that's all.”
He wraps his arms around me. “He's going to be excited, you know? There's no reason to worry.”
“I know. I think the hormones are making me crazy.”
Jake chuckles and kisses my neck. “You're not crazy. Are you ready to tell him?”
“Yes.” I am ready to share this wonderful news with Drake.
We head downstairs. Drake is sitting in the living room, watching TV. Jake calls him into the kitchen with us. He squeezes my hand as Drake walks in, taking a seat at the table with us. There's a cake in the middle and a bag with a present inside.
“What's this for?” he asks.
“I wanted cake because we're celebrating,” I tell him.
“Okay.” He nods. “What are we celebrating?”
Jake slides the gift bag to him. “Open it.” While Drake starts pulling the tissue paper out, Jake says, “We're all a family here and we wanted to tell you first.”
Drake pulls the bib out of the bag and I hold my breath, waiting for his reaction. His brows bunch together for a moment as he silently reads, “I Get My Awesome from My Uncle!” But then he laughs.
“I'm going to be an uncle?” Drakes looks between us.
I finally breathe. “Yep. You get to spoil Baby Benson and you have the chance to be the 'Cool Uncle'. You'll be our baby's first friend, Drake. Plus, when Jake is away, I might need some help. Do you think you're up for being an uncle?”
He glances at the bib and then back at me, grinning. “Of course!” Drake stands to walk over to us, giving us each a hug. “Congratulations! I'm going to be an uncle!” he says with a lot of excitement.
Jake chuckles and I laugh. “Yes, you are,” Jake tells him. “This means we are officially,” he lifts the lid to the cake box, “deeming you A Man of the House.”
Drake laughs as he reads, “Congrats on Being a Man of the House!” on the cake.
“This means I'm in charge when you're not here, right?” he asks.
“No,” I interrupt with a giggle. “I'm still in charge. You have earned a new title that means our baby will look up to you when Jake isn't here. You're going to have to be on your best behavior, you know that, right?”
“I can handle that. Do you know if it's a boy or girl yet? I hope it's a boy. Boys are more fun.”
“Hey, now. What if I don't want to be outnumbered?” I ask.
“So it's a girl?”
I shrug. “We don't know yet. For now, we call him or her Baby Benson.” The smell of the cake is making my stomach grumble. “Okay, boys. It's time to eat cake.”
They laugh at me, but I ignore them. “I am really excited. I'm looking forward to my Uncle responsibilities.”
“We're excited too,” Jake says, kissing my temple.
Drake frowns and I ask him what's wrong. He glances nervously at Jake, before looking back at me. “I don't know how to ask this really.”
“What is it?” Jake questions.
“Is there a chance that, uh,” he pauses, looking even more nervous. “That you might lose this one too?” He gulps as my smile fades at the thought, but he quickly adds, “Sorry, Emily. I was wondering and I-”
“No, it's fine,” I cut him off. “I'm further along than when the miscarriage happened. That's why we waited so long to tell you. We wanted the risk to be slim to none when we told you.”
Jake squeezes my hand. “Baby Benson is going to come and join our family. That's what we know.”
Drake nods, looking relieved. “Are we going to eat this cake or what?” he jokes.
So that's what we do. Boy or girl, it doesn't matter. Our lives are wonderful as it is and Baby Benson is only going to make it that much better. Jake is going to be a fantastic father. I'm going to be a great mother. And Drake is going to be the coolest uncle a kid could ever have. I never thought this is how my life would turn out. One thing is for sure, though. I can't wait to meet Baby Benson and spend the rest of my life with Jake and Drake. They are my family, my happily ever after. Always.
