“Do you know how long this will take?”
“It shouldn’t be more than an hour.”
“Okay, I’m going to put you on hold for a minute to look at the calendar.”
“Sure,” he says, and I place the call on mute, then look up at Blake.
“When can you go with me?” I ask, knowing that it’s going to be more difficult for him to get away than it is for me.
“Tomorrow morning is clear until ten. See if he can set it up before then; if not, we might have to schedule it for next week, after the next group leaves,” he says, and I unmute the call.
“Hey, Lucas, tomorrow before ten works for us. If that’s not okay with Ginny and Jeff, we will have to schedule a time for next week.”
“Perfect, if you can hold for a second, I’ll give Ginny a call and see if . . . let’s say, eight thirty works for her.”
“Sounds good,” I reply, and the line goes quiet. I stare at the screen of my phone, questioning if I’m doing the right thing.
“I was thinking,” Blake says, sliding his finger down my temple, then back behind my ear, grabbing my attention, and I focus on his handsome face. “When we leave here, I’ll follow you to your parents’, and we can take Sam to the park, then have dinner in town.”
“I’d like that, and Sam will be happy about seeing you in person. He was cranky after his video call with you this morning.”
“I missed him too.” He opens his mouth like he’s going to say more, but Lucas comes back on the line, cutting him off.
“Ginny says eight thirty works for her and Jeff, so I’ll text you the address for the office when we hang up, and see you tomorrow morning.”
“Great, see you then.” I hang up after he says goodbye, then meet Blake’s gaze. “Well, there’s no going back now.”
“We don’t have to show up for the appointment,” he points out; then his expression softens. “But I know you need to do this, and tomorrow, when it’s over, you’ll either have the closure you need or more people in your life who love Sam.”
“You’re right.” I let out a breath, and he grabs my hand and pulls me up to stand in front of him. I fit myself between his spread thighs and rest my hands on his chest. “Did you see Maverick when you got here?”
“No, and his truck wasn’t in the lot when I arrived. How did he seem when you talked to him?”
“Like himself. Do you think he was telling the truth about his phone?”
“Yeah, he’s not one to lie about shit like that.” His hands smooth up my arms, then curve around my neck so he can pull me closer. “Sucks that I gotta get back to work.”
“Does it?” I drop my eyes to his mouth as I lean into him, and he grins, pulling me closer to touch his mouth to mine. The kiss starts out soft and sweet but heats up when his fingers slide into my hair, and I nip his lip. My lips part when his tongue touches my bottom lip, and before I know it, we’re making out hot and heavy, with our hands roaming all over each other.
When his mouth trails down my neck, I cup him over his jeans, listening to him groan, then jerk back when Tanner walks into the office.
“Oh shit. Sorry,” Tanner says, turning and heading right back out the door.
“It’s okay!” I yell after him as I straighten my top and pat down my hair. “You don’t have to leave.”
“Are you sure?” He chuckles while Blake adjusts himself and moves to stand behind my chair, probably in an attempt to hide his erection.
“Yep.” I grab my coffee and down a gulp of it as he walks back into the room.
“If the door had been shut, I would have knocked.” He grins, taking a seat, then looks at Blake over my shoulder. “You want some ice, man?”
“Funny,” Blake grumbles. Then he asks, “What are you doing here?”
“I got a message from Mav this morning saying he lost his phone but that he was here. I had to go to the grocery store, so I figured I’d stop by to check on him.”
“I think he’s out getting a new cell phone now,” I tell him. “Are Cybil and the baby home, or did you bring them with you?”
“They’re home.” The look on his face changes, and it’s so beautiful, because I know it’s because he’s thinking of his wife and daughter. “Cybil’s still in some pain after the C-section, and Claire’s still sleeping most of the time, so they’re just hanging in bed.”
“Well, let me know if you need help with anything, even if you want me to come over so you guys can take a nap.” I smile. “I remember how little sleep you get during those first few weeks.”
