Good Girl - Page 49

I’m sat in the accident and emergency department.

They’ve put my left wrist into a cast and given me some painkillers which are thankfully taking the edge off it.

I guess I should be grateful that I’m not more injured. Grateful that I’m even alive.

Katie’s beside me. They checked her over but apart from an airbag burn to her face she doesn’t have any other injuries.

“I called your stepdad.” She says. “I hope you don’t mind but I didn’t want to call your mum.”

“That’s okay.” I say. I’d rather she called Dominic because right now he’s the only person I want to see. In truth the only person I need.

As if by perfect timing I see him walking in, looking flustered, and the nurse points across to me.

I feel my breath catch in my throat as my eyes meet his.

“Eden.” I see him mouth but he’s half running to me, wrapping his arms around me and I bury my face in his chest. I don’t care who sees. I don’t care what they think either.

“You came.” I murmur breathing in his scent. Feeling the strength of him as he holds me and in this moment he feels so incredibly safe.

“Of course I did.” He says pulling away, cupping my face and a part of me wants him to kiss me right now.

Katie clears her throat and I glance at her. She’s giving me a look. A curious look. That I have to try so hard not to blush at.

“Are you hurt?” Dominic asks and I turn my eyes back to him.

“Only my wrist.” I say holding it up.

“Is it broken?”

I nod. “It’s a small break though. A hairline fracture they called it.”

He shakes his head. “What happened?”

“Some idiot jumped the lights.” I say.

“That idiot to be precise.” Katie adds nodding her head in the direction of the man only a few beds over. From what I can tell he got off lightly, only a mild concussion.

“Him?” He says to her and she nods.

Suddenly Dominic’s crossing the space, grabbing him, half hauling him out by the scruff of his neck.

“You piece of shit.” Dominic growls.

“Dominic.” I cry.

“Do you know what you did? You almost killed her.” He shouts.

The man splutters. He’s clearly high as a kite and his body movements are all off. It’s a wonder the police haven’t arrived yet.

“Dominic.” I say louder.

The nurses are trying to pull him off. I jump from the bed, my heart is thumping so loudly.

“Stop.” I say putting my hands on him. “I’m okay. I’m not hurt.”

He looks at me. “He broke your wrist. He could have killed you.”

“But he didn’t.” I say.

He shakes his head dropping the man so that he falls back against the bed.

“It’s okay.” I say to Dominic because I can see he’s still raging.

“No it’s not.” He replies wrapping his arm around me and leading me away.

Katie’s staring open-mouthed again. I drop my gaze. I can’t look at her right now because then she’ll know. She’ll see it in my face.

“Is she okay to be discharged?” Dominic asks as the doctor appears.

“I’ll just sort the paperwork now.”

“Good.” He says and then he turns to me. “Let’s get you home.”

“What about Katie?”

“Are your parents picking you up?” He asks her.

Katie shakes her head. “They’re out of town.”

“Can we give her a lift?” I ask. I’m not going to let her get a taxi home. I want to make sure she’s back safe. It’s only fair. And besides she’d do the same for me.

“Sure.” He says. “Let’s go.”
