"I don't know where I am." Nope. Not the right thing to say. "I mean, I'm safe. I just don't know the exact address." In a panic I found myself glancing over to my shadow who had the nerve to be smiling at my struggles. So now he had to go and show emotion? I was pretty sure we weren’t going to be friends.
"Daisy Stone, tell me exactly what you've gotten yourself into."
Fine. She wanted answers, I'd give her answers. "I'm kind of seeing someone."
"You? You're seeing someone."
"Well, don't sound so shocked."
"I'm not trying to be insulting. It's just... You've met you."
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever. But I am seeing someone. And he's... a lot. You're gonna hate him. I don't think he's going to love you either, to be honest."
"If the relationship starts with you disappearing without even a word, I think you might be right."
"He's involved with some dangerous things." I bit my lip as I waited for her to respond.
"Fuck, Daisy. You couldn't meet a boring college guy?"
"I did meet them. They were just boring."
She chuckled. "Did he refuse to let you call me or something?"
"I mean, he took my phone and never gave it back to me. Gave me a new one this morning."
"And do you think you're in danger, or is he just insane?"
I thought of Borya visiting me at work and the bruise that was forming on my shoulder from his threats. "Why not both?"
"Fuck. What am I supposed to tell your bosses?"
Already Becks was thinking about how to take care of me. "Alek is going handle it." I doubted I was going back to any of my jobs, but I didn't want to admit that to Becks yet. She was already taking this better than I had expected.
"Alek? That's Mr. Hotshot's name?"
"Yes. And that's all you're getting out of me about him right now." Possibly for her own protection.
"You know I'm still pissed about this, right?"
She wouldn't be Becks if she wasn't. "Totally understandable. But before you go, you should know one more thing." I didn't wait for her to respond, but pushed through. "Because we live together, dangerous people might come there looking for me, so Alek might be moving you into his mansion to live with him and me. You may or may not have a choice. Sorry, and I love you. Bye!"
I hung up the phone and tossed it on the table, ignoring it as it started to ring with an angry fervor. I think I'd fulfilled my quota of phone bravery for the day.
A chuckle from across the room caught my attention. I turned to see my shadow actually laughing at me.
I raised a brow. "Laugh now. Wait until you have to watch the both of us. We'll see who's laughing then."
He noticeably shut up.
