Chapter29

The knife was like a weight in my hands, but I held onto it like a lifeline. As soon as Borya had walked away, I’d jammed it between the ropes and my wrist to start cutting away at my binds. With the bad angle, it had been going painfully slow, and I meant that literally.

Even though the sharp side was at the rope, the back edge of the knife was still hard and rubbing back and forth against my skin. I couldn’t see it, but it had to be bleeding by now.

When they came to grab me, I thought for sure they’d see my escape attempt, but they just picked me up and pulled at my arms as though I was nothing more than a rag doll. For once, I wasn’t upset at the rudeness because it gave me more time to work on the rope.

The man in charge was exchanging words with Alek, and I was trying to pay attention while getting through the ropes. I’d been half unconscious when brought into the building and had no idea where we actually were.

My strategy was to get free of the ropes, use the knife to surprise the men holding me and get to Alek. From there, I would follow his lead. But I needed to get to him first. I could trust him to get me out of here, but as long as these two thugs were touching me, Alek could only do so much.

When the rope finally tore through, it was time to act. Knowing I needed to get past the two beasts of men holding onto me was one thing. Actually doing it was another.

“Admit it, Rishka. Your time in Miami is over.”

Alek was ignoring the obnoxious man. His dark gaze was on me. He knew I was planning something and was waiting for my move. I wasn’t going to let him down.

Using his eyes and trying to channel some of his crazy energy that I knew fueled him, I pushed through my exhaustion and pain, and threw myself out of the way, shoving the knife into the side of the guard to my left.

I waited to be hit by the other guard, but nothing happened. Well, a lot happened. Just not to me.

As soon as I attacked, the bullets started to fly. The guard to the right of me took a shot straight to the head.
