“Well, Bear should have been used to Bristol cooking for him after I fell out of Dr. Douche’s van. She made this tuna casserole that was absolutely amazing.” Luna moaned. “Meg and Bristol are both amazing.”
“They’re different, though,” I muttered. “Bristol’s cooking had a professional finish to it. Meg’s”—I shook my head and smiled—“Meg’s is just like home.”
“He’s fully in the Meg Zone,” Greta laughed.
“Well, we’ll leave you two in the Meg Zone and go be on our way to get our own plates to enter the Meg Zone.” Ransom grabbed Luna’s hand and pulled her to him.
“We’ve only been here a little bit,” Luna chuckled.
“Go,” Greta motioned with her fork. “I am going to eat this, take two pain pills, and pass out again. You’re not missing anything.”
“Are you going to actually take your shoes off before you pass out this time?” Luna asked.
Greta rolled her eyes. “Well, duh. You took them off already.”
Ransom pulled Luna toward the door. “I’ll check in with you tomorrow, Bear.”
“And I’ll be over right away in the morning, Greta. You also know that most of the aunts will be with me, too,” she laughed.
Greta groaned. “Make sure it’s not before nine. I get a day off tomorrow, and my ass will not be up with the chickens.”
“You got it. We’ll be here at nine oh one.” Luna gave a salute, and Ransom pulled her out the front door. “Bye!”
The door slammed shut, and Greta looked up at me.
“Can I get that pain pill?”
“You hurting, mama?” I asked.
She nodded and set down her fork. “Like I got ran over by freight train headed to the rock quarry.”
“That’s pretty specific,” I chuckled. I moved over to the counter and grabbed the bottle of pills. I twisted off the cap with one hand and balanced my plate in the other hand. “What do you want to drink?”
“Water.”
I shook two pills into her hand, twisted the cap back on the pills, then grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. “Bottoms up, mama.” She grabbed the bottle of water from me and downed the pills. “Now eat,” I ordered.
She tipped her head back and looked at me. “I will as long as you sit down and stop standing over me.”
I set down my plate and sat in the chair next to her. “Whatever you want.”
“You say that a lot.”
I shrugged and took a bite of my food.
“At least to me.”
“You just had the shit kicked out of you and escaped being killed. I think you deserve to have whatever you want for a little bit.”
She laughed and nodded. “I suppose you are correct. I just have to wonder how long this is going to last. A girl could get used to having whatever she wants.”
“Yeah, mama.”
I finished the rest of my plate, and Greta managed to get down most of hers. “You get enough?” I asked.
She nodded and pushed away her plate. “More than enough.” She smothered a yawn with the back of her hand. “And I’m ready to pass out in about ten minutes. Enough time for me to go to the bathroom to shower and get into some pajamas.”
“You need help?” I asked.
“I think I can still go to the bathroom. I thankfully have a padded toilet seat, so I’ll be good.”
“I was talking about getting undressed and showered, mama.” She was gonna have to twist and turn to get her clothes off, and I knew from personal experience that wasn’t easy when you were banged up.
“Oh, Bear. You’re gonna have to take a rain check tonight. I’m not up for a roll in the hay with the Bear.”
I chuckled and shook my head. “You’re a nut, mama.”
She shrugged and slowly stood. “That I am.” She reached for her plate, but I shook my head.
“I’ll get that. Don’t worry about it.”
Greta fanned her face with her hand. “He’s tall, dark, handsome, and he cleans up. You’re like a dream come true, lumberjack.”
I shook my head and grabbed her plate, then scooped up the rest of her food and shoved it in my mouth. “If you say so, Greta.”
“I like mama better,” she mumbled. She moved to the stairs and lifted her foot onto the bottom step. “Night,” she called. She slowly made her way up the stairs, and I listened to her footsteps move around upstairs.
Even after getting beat up, Greta was still her nutty self. However, she moved a little bit slower.
God knew I better appreciate her slowing down right now because as soon as she started feeling better, it was going to be like watching a tornado. If she was anything like Luna, which she was, she wasn’t going to sit by and wait for someone else to catch Dr. Lu. She was going to be there front and center, and I was going to be right there next to her.
