That might have been a mistake.
King and the original members of the club had put in their time restoring cars and building the club. If they didn’t want to work, they didn’t have to.
King stepped toward Pie, and Pie took a huge step back. “You know what,” King smirked. “I do work here.” He held his arms wide. “We all do. So, I’ll tell you what, Pie. I am going to work side by side with you on that Firebird. You and I are going to restore it together.”
“Wh-what?” Pie stammered. “I don’t need that much help. I was just talking out of my ass.”
King smiled wide and planted his hand on Pie’s shoulder. “I know, but now your ass is going to pay for all of that talking. It’s you and me for the next week.” King pushed Pie to turn and put his arm around his shoulders.
Pie looked around frantically. “Help?” he called.
“Good luck,” Hero laughed.
King pulled Pie toward the Firebird and raised his arm over his head. “I’ll be working with my buddy if you need me.”
I walked into the clubhouse and pushed my sunglasses on top of my head. “Luna around?” I asked Easy and Snapper, who were sitting at the bar.
“We’re here because you want to talk to Luna?” Dad asked. He plopped down on the couch and turned on the TV. “We could have just fucking called her.”
I could have, but I wanted to get out of the house.
Easy nodded to the hallway. “I think she’s in the office with Meg. She came in here ranting about Tacos and Titties.”
“Should have just called her,” Dad drawled. “Now you’re gonna be caught up with Titties and Tacos.”
“That doesn’t sound too bad to me,” Snapper laughed.
“It is when Luna is part of it,” Easy pointed out.
Snapper cringed and shook his head. “Titties and Luna should not be in the same sentence.”
“Agreed,” Hero, Easy, and dad called in unison.
I also agreed, but I had other things on my mind.
“Where are you going?” dad hollered.
“To the office,” I replied. “I don’t need a babysitter.”
“Good,” dad drawled.
I made my way down the hallway, out the back door, and into the office to the body shop.
“Hey!” Meg called when I opened the door. “I thought I saw you and Demon roll in.” She got up from behind her desk and wrapped me in a hug. “It’s so good to see you walking around. Did you get the cheesecake and muffins I brought over?”
I nodded and patted my stomach. “Sure did. Had cheesecake for dinner last night and two muffins for breakfast this morning.”
“Zag,” Meg laughed. “I hope you ate more for dinner than just cheesecake.”
“Of course.” I had some sliced strawberries on top of it. Adding fruit to the cheesecake made it more of a balanced meal, right?
Meg squeezed my shoulders and sighed. “I’m so glad you’re alive,” she whispered.
I loved all of my aunts, but Meg really was the one I was closest with. “It’ll take a lot more than a little bomb to get rid of me.”
“Thank god,” Luna drawled. “You and Zig both drive me crazy, but I prefer you both breathing.”
“How nice,” I laughed.
Meg stepped to the side and glared at Luna. “At least hug your cousin before you insult him.”
Luna rolled her eyes but gave me a quick hug. “I’m glad you’re not dead.”
“Thanks,” I chuckled. “I’m glad, too.”
Meg clasped her hands together and sighed. “So sweet.”
Luna stepped back and leaned around me to look at Meg. “Are you feeling okay?”
Meg waved her hand at Luna. “I think I’m going through menopause. I’m all over the damn place.”
“More so than normal?” I drawled. Meg had always been a nut for as long as I had known her.
Meg wiped her nose with the back of her hand. “Maybe I need to get a puppy.”
Luna’s jaw dropped, and I closed my eyes.
We both knew Meg. If the words came out of her mouth, she had already decided she was going to get a new dog.
God help King.
“How did she go from menopause to getting a puppy?” Luna whispered to me.
“You’re a woman. You should be able to follow her crazy thoughts.”
Luna looked up at me. “I don’t think anyone can follow Meg’s thoughts.”
“What were you talking about before I walked in?”
Meg moved back behind her desk and sighed.
“Tacos and titties,” Luna whispered.
