“What?”

“When the police get here, I might be arrested.”

“What?” she squawked. “Why would you be arrested? You’re not the psycho who killed a bunch of people.”

I couldn’t help but smile. “I know, baby, but I did just shoot and kill Malcom.”

“Because he deserved it!” she shouted.

God help me, but even with a dead body on the floor, Tess was damn cute. “You and I both know that, and the police with figure it out, too, but until they do, they might detain me.”

Tess wrinkled her nose. “That’s dumb. They better take me with you.”

I shook my head. “Can you not be cute right now? I’m trying to explain what will happen, so you aren’t scared.”

“They shouldn’t arrest you.”

I shook my head and laughed. “I agree, but the police are just going to do their job. I shouldn’t be detained for long.” I pulled up Ransom’s number and connected the call.

This call would hopefully make that so.

Ransom didn’t work for the Falls City police department, but I was hopeful he could try to get here and throw his weight around a little bit.

“Yo,” Ransom called.

“You hearing any chatter on the scanner?” I asked.

“Should I be?” he asked.

“I got Malcom.”

“No shit,” Ransom gasped. “Are you okay? Tess?”

“We’re both fine. Tess is covered in blood, but none of it is hers.”

Tess looked down at her body and curled her lip. “Gross.”

“Did she just say gross?” Ransom laughed.

“Yeah, she did.”

“She’ll fit in great with Luna and Greta. They would probably say the same thing.” The radio crackled on Ransom’s end of the phone.

“The call just went out. I’m going to grab Bear and head your way.”

I smiled. “That’s what I was hoping for.”

“They’re gonna take you in,” Ransom told me.

“I know.” I stepped over Malcom and moved closer to Tess. “I don’t think it will be for long. This psycho has enough explosives strapped to his chest to take out the whole block.”

“Are you sure it won’t go off?” he asked.

I crouched down next to Malcom and examined the vest closer. “It looks like there is a detonation button and no timer. I think we should be fine until the police and bomb squad get here.”

“Bro,” Ransom laughed. “That means this is over. You know that, right?”

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Yeah, man. It’s over.”

At least, I hoped it all was.
