I change into my shorts and tank top, then make my way down the stairs as

I bounce happily into the kitchen. Antonio already sat a smoothie in front of me on the counter, anticipating I’d need it for the day.

“Someone is looking bright and chipper this morning,” he says, giving me a wink. I felt my face flush as I took a long sip of my smoothie.

“You don’t think it’s weird?” I questioned, considering the circumstance.

He shook his head. “Marine was a shrew, always harping at him. It’s not like you two are close, and he isn’t even your father, so no, I don’t think it’s weird. Mr. Wellington even looked happier when leaving for work this morning, happier than I’ve seen him in years. You put that look on his face, Piper.”

I grinned at him while I finished up my smoothie.

“Hey, what do you say we cook him a fancy dinner with a delicious dessert tonight?”

Antonio’s grin widened. “Now you’re speaking my language. Go for your run! When you get back, we can go over recipes. It will give me time to get the kitchen back in order.” He said to me.

I nodded, popped in my earbuds, and walked out the backdoor, down the pathway to the beach.

I stretched quickly, and started my run nice and slow, giving my tired muscles time to warm up.

Last night was one of the best nights of my life, there’s no denying it. I can’t wait to surprise Branson with a lovely dinner, along with a little black set of lingerie I swiped up for later this evening.

I finish my run with the grin still plastered on my face. I skip up the stone steps to the back door, eager to meet with Antonio and discuss dinner plans.

As I walk into the house, my recovery drink is on the counter, but no sign of Antonio.

I go over to my glass and take a sip, hearing voices come from the study.

Branson must be home!

I walk down the hall toward the room, suddenly pausing in my tracks as I hear a familiar voice reach my ears... and it’s not one I’ve listened to in years.

“Darling, it didn’t work out with Pierre and I want you back. We have been together all this time. Do you really want to throw all of this away?” Mother purrs at Branson.

As I reach the peak of the door, I get a small glimpse of her sweater hitting the floor, and immediate tears begin burning in my eyes.

Branson is no different from the other men she’s suckered in the past. He’s falling under her spell once again and I’m damn well not sticking around to watch this.

I slip back down the hallway and race up to my room.

This morning, I was the happiest I’ve been in such a long, long time, but now, my chest pains as I feel so betrayed.

They’ll get back together, and then she’ll quickly wrap him back around her well-manicured finger.

That’s just what she does with men. She couldn’t believe her luck when she landed a big fish like Branson, and it looks like she hasn’t lost her touch a single bit.

I pick up my phone and quickly text a friend I can always count on to let me crash for a night. After I drown my sorrows in tequila tonight, I will get a hold of Aunt Jenny in the morning and move in with her. It is what is is.

After recent events, getting a job is now my priority. As I throw the last of my things in my bag, my phone beeps.

It’s an email from the editor I sent my book to. In her words, “Although the book needs a lot of work to become publish worthy, it has potential”.

She really believes I have a good book here?

A teary smile crosses my face; at least one thing is going right today. Working on the book and job searching will do as priorities over the next few days. It will help keep my mind off of... him.

Walking out of the house, I close the door softly, and go to take a seat in my old rust bucket. I zoom down the driveway as I need to be far from this place. So much has happened in this last week and it feels as if my head is spinning uncontrollably as I keep focus on the road.

I went from losing my virginity to a man I felt myself falling in love with, to drowning in tears from knowing he’s probably fucking my mother right now on his desk. There’s no doubt I’m messed up.
