“Are you going somewhere with this?”
“Do you think that giving Cahill your time is going to lead you to answers?”
He glanced at his sister out of the corner of his eye. Yeah, she’d always been the smartest. “I’m not sure. But at this point, I have to try. I know they know something.”
“Why does it matter?”
“Because it does.” He was tired of having to defend himself. He expected it from Brendan. That was just the way their relationship had always been. But Nessa was his little sister. Most of her life, she’d looked up at him with stars in her baby blues like he could do no wrong. “Don’t you want answers?”
“I did. When I was a kid. Sometimes you just need to accept things. Answers won’t change the fact that I grew up without a father.”
He often forgot that it had been different for her. He’d been a teenager while she’d only been a little girl when their dad went missing.
Pulling up in front of her apartment building, he said, “Call me if that asshole shows up.”
“I doubt he will. You’re a scary guy.”
“I’m serious.”
“I know. Thank you for being a good big brother. Congrats on the promotion. But maybe it’s time to look for a new job.” She swung the door open. “Thanks for the ride.”
She hopped out and he watched as she went into her building. He considered her words for a minute. He couldn’t think about looking for a new job. It had always been about Cahill and getting answers, but now he wondered what would happen once he had answers or reached another dead end.
Could he move on?
